Schmerz/Ricardo Gelok

 Interview with Schmerz/Ricardo Gelok

(Non Serviam Records, Winter Of Sin,

Steel Shock, Embraced By Darkness)

Hail Schmerz, you are very welcome to my small inferno Archangel’s Lantern. Introduce your awesome label Non Serviam Records in short please. (Tell us about the beginnings and about releases as well)

Hello, thank you. I have started the label in 2008 I think. It started as an online store, and quite soon I felt the urge to release music of bands i like as well. So i’ve contacted some bands I know, who might be interested in doing release at my label. The band Grief of Emerald was interested in working with me, and so I had a record label with a first release.

When Grief of Emerald “The Devils Deep” was released, other bands started to send promo’s and quite quick we did more releases.

These days we have already released a lot of albums,  and since a few years we are working with Season of Mist for the distribution of all our releases in Europe and the norther part of America. Of course fans can buy also directly from our webshop. We have next to our own releases also a mailorder of other releases. (we ship Worldwide.)

I’m so thankful for the awesome Trident:’North’ digipack CD you sent me this year. I must say that it’s just a brilliant album and it was my favorite release of 2020. How did you meet Johan Norman and Trident?

I’m happy you like it. I am also really happy with this album. Trident is a great band, and they create really good music. So I was honored when Johan asked me if I wanted to release the album.

Me and Johan are friends for a long time, we did some shows together with Trident and my band (Embraced by Darkness). Due to this friendship we were already working together for Trident, me helping with their social media pages and with some live shows.

(Trident 'North' digipack CD, what sent me Ricardo of Non Serviam Records in January this year - GF)

Johan Norman is One of my favorite Swedish guitarists long time ago. What are your preferred albums/tracks of his past bands, namely Satanized, Decameron, Dissection, Soulreaper and last but not least Trident?

- Yeah, Johan is a skilled musician and het knows how to write good music. One of my all time favorite albums he was involved in is “Dissection - Storm of the Light’s Bane” .

When you listen to Soulreaper, you can hear already the style of Trident. Actually, I have followed Johan his musical career from the early days.

As I told you earlier, Grief of Emerald was my first release, and it’s no coincident that Johnny Letho (singer Grief of Emerald) was also in Decameron.

The Swedish Black metal scene from the “90 of the Göteborg area were musicians that worked alongside each other and shared some band members.

Decameron “My Shadow...” is also a hidden gem. We are thinking of doing a re-release of this album.

One of my favorite songs of the Trident - North album is “Summoning”.

You are involved in two bands if I’m not mistaken: Winter of Sin since 2000 as a guitarist/vocalist and Steel Shock as a guitarist. Would you be so kind to talk about these bands?

Well I am involved in more bands. In 1998 i started Winter of Sin, we released several albums, and after the last album “Violence Reigns Supreme” the band was put on ice. But since last week were have resurrected the band again. We are working on a new album, I hope we can visit Sweden to record the album at Armageddon Recording studio. This is the studio of Anders Backelin (Bassist Trident and ex-Lord Belial).

Around 2014 some (ex)members of Winter of Sin started a new band called Embraced By Darkness. (Melodic Black Metal) We have recorded a 4 track promo that we will send out to several labels.

Since 2020 I’m in a Heavy Metal band called Steel Shock. I started is the band as live guitarist, but now I am a full member. We are working on the 3rd album of the band. When all the songs are written for this new album we will enter the studio and then search for a label that want to release it.

Me and “Schrat” (the other guitarist of Winter of Sin/Embraced by Darkness) also have an Atmospheric Doom project called “Finsternis”. We both are huge fan of the Doom style, so back in 2008 we decided to start this project as well. We never recorded/released any of the songs...maybe we should do it hahaha.

(Winter of Sin during the "Violence Reigns Supreme" photoshoot
with Henri and Michiel, of God Dethroned in the band.)

When and how did you enjoy underground? What was your very first live show you visited back in the day? Which releases (tapes/LPs) you bought at first?

- I think at the age of 12 I started to listen to metal music. And soon after I started my first band...I think it was called “Eternal Death” It was Death Metal with some melodic elements in it.

When we were young tape-trading was quite popular, when i got my allowance I started to buy stuff, like vinyls and cds. I also bought back then (end “80) my first guitar and amp. The first vinyl I bought was Death - Scream Bloody Gore, when i bough my new stereo-set with a CD play the first CD I bought was Death - Spiritual Healing.

Which guitarists and vocalists inspired you in the past? Do you have favorite ones nowadays?

In the beginning I was inspired by the first wave of Death Metal, bands such as Morbid Angel, Death, Massacre, Brutality etc....the Florida Death Metal wave so to say. (I was never inspired by bands such as Slayer, Metallica etc.)

Singers from that era I liked were: Dave Vincent, Scott Reigel, Chuck Schuldiner etc.

When early “90 the Scandinavian Black Metal wave came bands as Satyricon, Enslaved, Emperor, Lord Belial, Dissection and a lot more became a huge part of my life. The sound and songwriting were even more of my liking. And I still enjoy listening to those albums.

I am so happy I was in the middle of it, when the Death Metal wave, and later the Black Metal wave conquering  the Earth. (the best of 2 worlds)

Enlighten us please about your past activity with bands as Gheestenland, Finsternis, Hagel, Krematorium IV and Windsmear.

- Gheestenland was a Black Metal band from my area where I played guitars. We released some albums and did quite some shows. I don’t think the band exists anymore. I left the band year ago.

Finsternis is as I said still active. I hope to do some releases with this project.

Hagal is a project of mine where I’m putting in ideas that are not suitable with the other bands. It’s not active, but also not dead...maybe I will release something of it, who knows hahaha.

Krematorium IV was an project of me and “Schrat” not sure if that’s alive anymore. “Schrat” had songs written...but it’s on ice so quite some time, so I think it’s dead.

Windsmear was a local bad with friends where I was playing on drums. I think the last time we were making music was 15 year ago. It was fun to do this, but since the bass player now lives in London I don’t think we will be rehearsing soon again hahaha. But when he wants to start playing again, I am ready. I have a rehearsal room at my house.

What is your opinion about Johan’s brother, Pontus’ Black metal horde CON?

- I like the music of CON, it’s a pity the band is unknown. Well maybe if they release a new album I could be of any help...who knows. If you listen to the music you can hear the influences of Johan in it.

Apart from the music do you have any special hobbies?

- Music consumes a lot of my time, the label and next to that the bands. But when I have spare time I like to hang out with friends and of course spending time with my family.
I sometimes play games on the PlayStation, but I have to admit I haven’t touched it in a while hahaha.
I also like to collect CDs and merchandise....of and guitars as well. The collection is quite big, but there is always space for more haha.

I’ve noticed that through your label was released Temple:’Structures of Chaos’ (what is a brilliant Death metal LP for me) and you made the cover design and layout. What are your favorite tracks of that excellent album?

- Yeah, I like to do stuff as that as well. I like to play with Photo-shop and try to create something nice (when needed of course)
My favorite track of that album is “Rituals of Marduk”...but the album has more great songs. But this is the first song that come in mind.

As far as I know you are from a very nice Dutch city Appingedam. What interesting places are your recommendations to visit me? What’s about local cuisine?

- That’s correct, Appingedam is a small city in the northern part of the Netherlands.
It’s a medieval city center with canals through it, and there are some houses with so called “hanging kitchens” it is an extension of the house that is located on the outside of the house above the water of the canals.

The local cuisine is not that special, but the city has it own beer called “Floem” .
Of course we have several restaurants and pubs. So if you like an old city that’s near the sea you should visit Appingedam.

Dank je wel/thanks a lot Schmerz! Send your message to the readers in the end, please.

- Thank you for this interview!

A message to the metalheads out there:

Support the small/unknown bands as well...(every major band once started as local band).
Also support bands and labels by buying physical music and merchandise. This is the way we can keep the scene alive.

Pedro Anthares (Jumalation)

 Interview with Pedro Anthares (Jumalation)

Questions compiled by Jukka Räyskä Räsänen,

November 2021

How and when did your start your Thrash metal horde?

- Somewhere in the late 90`s, we wanted to play Thrash metal. We had just one time changes in our line-up: the drummer has to be replaced because of his health problems; Thrash metal is a brutal game!

How would you describe your music?

- Metal, metal and metal...

What kind of music you´re listening to and where you´ve been inspired from?

- We listen to all the old school Thrash metal bands, fuck to modern shitty bands! We are playing with punk attitude,  just because we´re not perfect musicians.

What is the situation with live shows?

- We´ve done some gigs, a few of them went better and few others were worse... but for us it´s not so important because we are playing just for fun! Some people like us and someones don´t really.

What is the meaning of your bandname means?

- Jumaleisson , Jumalaton, Godless ..just fooling around with words.

What your horde are doing if you have free time?

- We are going to work, drinking alcohol, playing cards. Everyone of us also involved in other bands and some members are have families. This band is just a hobby.

Who is the main song and lyric writer?  What should we know about your lyrics?

- About lyircs: antichristian-stuff , drinking alcohol, hangovers and everything weird. I usually write the riffs for songs and sometimes we create them together, the lyrics are our common work.

Is there any plans to release a new material in the near future?

- 6 new songs have been recorded and mixed in the last year but I better do not promise anything. Let's see when we will be ready for a new release...

Country of origin: Finland
Location: Helsinki, Uusimaa/Lahti, Päijät-Häme/Riihimäki, Kanta-Häme  Formed in: 2004
Genre: Thrash Metal
Lyrical themes: Horror, Lizards of the Night, Madness, Terror, War.

Gunther Theys (1.III.2013)

 Interview with Gunther Theys

(Ancient Rites, Iron Clad, Lion's Pride)

Questions compiled by Georgius and Sorin Necrotrooper

the conversation was published originally on Sadistik Witchfukk, 1st of March, 2013)

G: Ave prospective Pope Guntherius I.! I know you've removed this request but if you would be elected, which will be your first orders in Vatican?

- Haha imagine: Pope Guntherius I. My first request would be rather selfish. To open the Vatican library and enter the section with ancient “forbidden” books. I would gather scholars who have a great knowledge of ancient Greek and Latin and other old tongues for translation and dive into the hidden treasures. Probably this would immediately lead to discussions within the Vatican to replace me as this interest would reveal I am not the Pope they had in mind. Perhaps I should play it more clever and less obvious in order to win enough time in the library ;-)

We hope you will record a new Ancient Rites album as soon as possible and crush the European scenes. Please tell us about your future plans!

- We are working on new material and matters are progressing. We did receive interesting offers from record companies but it is too soon to tell when or on which label the new record will be released or where it will be recorded…The music industry has changed a lot over the past years, studio budgets are limited as cd sales are crashing due to downloading. I have no problem with people downloading but reality is that labels do not dare to take risks anymore with underground bands. Also I am rather old school, I still prefer to hold the original album in my hands but in general the mentality has changed. Bands finance themselves mostly by selling shirts nowadays and many pay for the own recordings etc We will see what the future will bring,  as soon as we have enough material to record a new album we will look deeper into the matter…

Back in time a little bit. You played during the late 70’s-early ’80’s in a lot of bands, would you be so kind shortly to share some info about that period?

- In the late 70’s I formed a Punk band named Addix in which I did vocals and bass. Our style was ’77 style Punk-rock but lyrically we differed from most bands in the style as the lyrics I wrote were misanthropic. In the early 80’s I played bass for bands such as Subversion (Discharge style) and Capital Scum (old school Hardcore). I formed my first Metal band in the early 80’s. Style was Black Metal with Speed/Thrash influences. We had names such as Necrophilia but it was impossible to find gigs or a decent line up. The style was not as “popular” as it is nowadays. Mid 80’s I joined a band named Nuclear Domination (Crossover) until I formed Ancient Rites around 1988. The rest is history…When I look back it is strange to see that several of the musicians I worked with died very young due to car accidents or suicide. Tragic. Also two of the founding Ancient Rites members died soon after the release of our debut demo “Dark Ritual”…I was looking at a picture of the 2nd A.R. gig recently and I realized I am on the photo surrounded with “dead” people: two band members but also an old friend of mine, a first hour fan who was in front of the stage on that photo. It is strange…Life can be hard. Past two weeks two friends of mine died, one had a heart attack, another one a brain stroke. I have been in and out of hospital myself a lot recently, operations and such but somehow I always pull through. I try to enjoy every minute on this earth, no time to sit down and complain or feel sorry for oneself.

G: For me Ancient Rites is a very unique band and to be honest you inspired me to write historical lyrics for my first band, Castrum and later to Domhring. Where do you take historical themes from? What is Your favourite historical era and why? What is your much-loved Ancient Rites album and song?

- Thanks for the compliment, much appreciated :) I take my inspiration from historical literature, travels to historical locations, museums etc. My first love as a child were the Ancient times. Ancient Rome, Gallia, Germania etc and World War II. I also developed an interest for the middle-ages as a kid. As time passed by my interests grew wider and wider. At this moment for instance I am reading about the Nordic Renaissance in the Lowlands and explore the 16th century writings of Erasmus, Pieter Gillis, Nicolas Cleynardus (who was born in my hometown, I have an authentic 16th century work of this scholar in my collection). But I “cross read”, at the same time I’m studying about the American Civil War, dive into eye witness accounts of World War I, read diaries of Flemish soldiers serving in Napoleon’s cavalry, Stanley exploring the Congo etc. The Victorian era I find fascinating but also prehistoric times or ancient cults or philosophy, also explorers from the Viking age to the Portuguese/Spanish conquistadors etc My interests are very wide, I love to “jump” from century to century, endless worlds to be discovered constantly… I have no particular fave A.R. album or song because they all are like my children to me :)

(I've got an awesome package from Erik Sprooten with dedicated Ancient Rites CD 'Fatherland', 10.I.2017-G)

Sorin: What bands influenced you during the Ancient Rites era?

- We weren’t influenced by any particular bands because we felt it was/is important to achieve an own identity. This happened in a natural way actually because keep in mind we listened to old Hard rock, lived the birth of NWOBHM, saw the beginning of Black Metal, the rise of Thrash, Doom, Speed Metal etc . I think we were subconsciously influenced by several genres we had experienced over the years and tried to do our own thing which resulted in an own identity…

Sorin: We all know in 1998 you went into a musical direction. Why did you decided to do that? Were you "bored" of traditional Black metal?

- Not at all. We never sat down to plan our sound, it was a natural evolution of musical progress without looking down on the tradition. Also we started working with classical and progressive musicians who produced our albums. In order to create an epic feel fitting to the often historical concept of the lyrics we felt it was an interesting move to experiment with classical music, to achieve a “filmic” atmosphere without however betraying the essence of our sound. Personally I would like to record another “primitive” album too. The “essence” of A.R. remains the same, we don’t mind using different “dialects” of the style. When one thinks of it: each A.R. release sounds different, still each release undeniably sounds like Ancient Rites.

G: You played/play also in bands Iron Clad and Lion’s Pride. Do you have any plans to release new albums with them in the near future?

- Only a few days ago the new Lion’s Pride release reached my address. The first prints for the band members. It was a long wait. Soon it  will be on the market. It is a double release containing old and brand new tracks on CD and a bonus DVD with old and new clips. It is a nice luxury edition with gatefold cover and booklet.  As far as Iron Clad is concerned there are no plans for a new album.

Ancient Rites gave a lot of concerts in Europe through the years. Share us, please, some funny stores.

- Too many stories to tell J. Ok one story: we toured England with At The Gates but got ripped off by the tour promoter who didn’t pay the tour bus agency. The label of At The Gates promised the tour agency to pay for the transport home of their band but our label didn’t help. We were kicked out of the bus and stranded in England with all our equipment in the middle of winter. We hide from the cold in telephone cells and with our last money we called the London promoter. He paid a train ticket and we travelled to London with only our guitars to play concerts to earn money to get back home again J. Later we had to return to England to retrieve our equipment, clothes and merchandise. A part of our merchandise was stolen. Hard times but I had a lot of laughs, I always keep a positive spirit even in the most difficult times, always helped me to survive…It was hilarious, we started the tour as a big rock band in a very luxury tour bus and returned like beggars who had to sleep in telephone cells without money for food. Lol!

G: I’m always fascinated when I read your posts about history on the popular social network. How many books do you have in your own collection? Which writers/poets (Flemish too) do you prefer?

- I have been collecting books since my childhood so one can imagine my library is rather big. On top I also collect graphical novels. I lack room. I do not know how many books I have in my collection to be honest. When a topic catches my interest I go to my library and find works on the matter, often books I don’t remember buying. As a collector I buy works that catch my interest but I wait the right moment to read them. I love reading ancient historians and philosophers such as Herodotus, Tacitus, Plutargos, Plato, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Julianus Apostata etc. Also theologists of the Renaissance era such as Erasmus, Pieter Gillis,Thomas More, Machiavelli. Writers such as Nietzsche, Lord Byron, Ernst Jünger, Ernest Claes I find inspiring as well. Modern historical novelists such as Steven Pressfield, Ian Pears, Umberto Eco, Gore Vidal, Steven Saylor, Joris Tulkens know how to revive past times in an excellent way. The list is endless. As I speak I hear my library calling my name. It’s an addiction my friend…I often find myself alone in this passion, people often say I don’t live this modern age enough, perhaps they are right but I always had this passion for anything historical even before I could read.

G: As I’ve noticed you are an admirer of movies too. Are you not angry when do you see in many so-called historical films a lot of non-sensical things? (as unsuitable clothes, weapons, dates etc.) Could You please name 5 of your favorite movies?

- Yes, many Hollywood productions annoy me, especially when they are presented as historical correct and are too far away from historical truth. I realize the masses don’t care for “detail” but Hollywood has large budgets, it wouldn’t harm to at least take in consideration correct dates, the right historical backgrounds, clothes, architecture etc…I saw a “historical” film recently, set in medieval times. Some of the background figures were dressed up and painted like Celts, some of the extras were shouting curses in Polish language while it were supposed to be  English soldiers. In another movie Romans enter the lands of current Scotland and one sees a lady dressed in medieval clothing as if she’s a character from “Braveheart”! Things like this disturb me. As if historical correctness is sacrificed to feed the cliché views of the masses. I still watch and enjoy some of the so called historical films to an extent but there are always those disturbing “details”. Remember how in “Kingdom of Heaven” Saladin puts the cross right on the table as a sign of respect after he has won the war? In reality he had a supposed piece of the holy cross dragged through the streets of Jerusalem for the crowds to desecrate the symbol. Why is history re-written I often wonder? Most cinema viewers will take the misinformation for reality. I think I expect more than just entertainment and that is my “curse”. Productions I did enjoy were the series “Rome” and “The Borgias”. I know there are historical mistakes and liberties taken but the “vibes” of the series are  correct with an eye for the culture, religion and architecture of the eras portrayed. Movies in other genres I love are “M”, “The Third Man”, “The Name of the Rose”, “Picnic at Hanging Rock”, “The Bunker”, “Exorcist”, “The Shining”, “The Birds”, “Citizen Kane”, “Nosferatu”, “Dog Soldiers” to name a few…

G: Could you tell us about your nice Flemish land in short? What places/museums do you recommend to visit to the readers? Which painters/sculptors do you like mostly?

- Flanders is the North, Flemish (Dutch) speaking part of current Belgium. There are many historical locations to visit. Brugge (Bruges) is a nice place to start. I recall American tourists who asked what time the theme park would be closed, they believed the city was a medieval museum J But also Ghent and Antwerp or Leuven are nice places to visit. Even my hometown Diest is as it already was a settlement in prehistoric times. There are many medieval buildings and remains here. Those interested in ancient history should visit Tongeren, it was a big Roman settlement in ancient times and the Gallo-Roman museum is quite interesting. Flemish painters I like are Pieter Breughel, Rubens, Adriaen Brouwer, Teniers…Some Belgian surrealists were not bad either like Delvaux, Magritte.

Introduce please the Flemish culinary art: which foods and drinks are your recommendations?

- Typical are the fries and mussels. We consume large amounts haha. Also typical are “Witloof” and Brussels Sprouts. And of course we have an enormous beer culture, almost every village has its own types, brands and recipes of beer dating back to medieval times. I do like the abbey beers brewed by monks since the middle-ages. Some of our beers carry interesting names such as Duvel, Lucifer, Satan etc.

Sorin: What do you think about such bands as Blasphemy, Beherit, Darkthrone, Mutilator, Vulcano, Rotting Christ, Necromantia, Varathron, Salem? What kind of music do you listen to nowadays generally? Are you into such stuff nowadays?

- Great bands. Most I know personally due to the intense merchandise trading/letters exchange and shared underground concerts in the early 90’s. I still listen to the same music I always listened, from classical music to noise, when the music is able to touch a string inside of me I am interested. Be it Wagner or Beherit, Triarii or Ennio Morricone…

Sorin: You also played two shows in Romania with Necrodeath. What do you remember about our country?

- We toured Romania and played smaller towns as well apart from these 2 dates you mentioned. I met many great people at our shows and I really enjoyed the epic landscapes while travelling through the country. I remember playing a small village and everyone turned up, even people who were not into Metal. Our music has Folk parts and the locals started a group dance so I jumped from the stage and joined in. Nice memories. Highlight for me were the historical locations we visited, castles linked to the history of Vlad Tepes and such. It felt like wandering around on a perfect film-set: full moon, Carpathian mountains and forests, wild rivers and castles in a gloomy architecture style. One can understand the vampire myths when being there, very gloomy and full of atmosphere.

Dank je wel Gunther! Create, please for the readers of Sadistik Witchfukk a fake history by Gunther and send a message to the fans of Ancient Rites from our land.

- Graag gedaan :)
A fake history? Ok ;-) Vlad Tepes was feared by his servants. One day he had enjoyed a nice meal but was annoyed by the meat stuck between his teeth. He ordered “tooth picks as sharp one could impale Ottoman invaders”. His servant was hard of hearing, took it literally and the next morning Vlad saw a field of defeated Ottoman armies impaled on huge tooth picks! “Not what I asked for but I can live with this” he said and impaled the servant too ;-)
Ok, enough nonsense. Thanks to all who supported our work in your beautiful ancient land. Ancient Rites Troopers Never Surrender!

Additional fake story: "Once upon a time, when owls still could speak, a poor simple man named George went to consult a powerful witch who lived in the Hungarian forest. Rumour had it she was related to Countess Bathory. "I feel miserable" he explained to her. "I have a lot of work but can't concentrate when I have several jobs to do. And I'm always ripped off by my customers, never have the heart to bargain hard. My wife dominates me and her mood changes drive me even more crazy. Don't you have an elixir that can help me with these matters?" The Witch named Pruprunella (for no reason) made poor George drink a mysterious elixir which contained unknown things and lots of chocolate. George felt a certain change. Then he broke into a panic as he was bleeding! "No worries Love" Pruprunella said "That's only your period. Want to join our Witches Coven, Georgette?"

Midgard (OUIJA)

 Interview with Midgard (OUIJA)

(Questions compiled by Paco Altur and Georgius)

Hail Midgard welcome to Archangels Lantern. As far as we know OUIJA was born from the ashes of Levial in 1994. (Levial just released a demo: "Possession of a Divine Soul"). How do you remember the beginnings of OUIJA back in the day?

- The birth of OUIJA came after the dissolution of LEVIAL, our first band. And the history of the band is the following, but I will to try abbreviate this question a bit, because this of the biographies is sometimes the never-ending story and I understand that people get bored when reading it, the same thing happens to me ... we started our trajectory about the year 1995 or something like that I don't remember the exact date and more at that time when he was a somewhat crazy kid ... after a time of much rehearsals we recorded a demo, which at that time, had a very good acceptance that led us to record our first album "Unbridled transilvanian passion", which also worked very well ... then we had already prepared a second album but it never saw the light for different reasons that are not important now. In 2008 we reassembled the band, we recorded an EP "Adversary" and then our second album "Ave voluptatis carnis". Currently we have just released our new EP "Selenophile Impia" and we hope for the first or middle of next year to have our third album ready ... that's all until today ... as I have already told you we could eternalize giving more information but this would be a heaviness for the reader.

Paco: OUIJA released its debut album "Ridding into the Funeral Paths" in 1997 through Repulse Records. I remember that at that time, the radios played one of the most emblematic songs of the Cradle (Dusk); and at the same time, one of your songs from the aforementioned Ridding: "Unbriedled Transilvanian Passion". What do you remember about those times, when your debut album is considered, even today, as the great masterpiece of Spanish Black metal?

- Those years were really exciting, the Black Metal movement was consolidating around the world and Spain was no exception. Everything was very pure so to speak, many bands, record labels and zines were being born and the cooperation was maximum within the underground. At that time we with a lot of effort edited our first album, which took us to the top in what concerns a national level and positioned us very well outside our borders. In those years we were very young, we never take our music career seriously, if it has been so we would have achieved greater achievements.

In the end, the important thing is the memory that remains of that time in you and I feel fortunate to have lived through that time and to have been part of the most primal history of Black Metal in Spain.

Paco: Unfortunately, this great musical entry did not fit within an overexploited genre, and OUIJA disappeared until returning in 2010 with the EP "Adversary". What can you say about all those 12-13 years that there was no news about OUIJA?

- For different personal reasons, the band was inactive those years, although Map our guitar never stopped composing privately for him. And I, as I imagine you will already know, I joined to SPELLCRAFT in those years. For the rest there is little more to talk about these years because nothing transcendent happened with reference to OUIJA.

Paco: In 2013 OUIJA unleashed "Ave Voluptatis Carnis"; the song "The Serpents Call Me" appeared in the Compilation "Spanish Inquisiton" along with other bands from our country such as the Andalusian Anvil Of Doom, Brutal Slaughter; the Basques Elbetreth, the “Manchegos” The Heretic; the Catalans Fuck Off, Vidres A La Sang or my Valencian countrymen Altar Of Sin; just to name a few; and of course, there is also a song: "Alone In The Eternity" from the album “Yersinia Pestis”, from your other project Spellcraft. What can you say about the composition and how this second album was created; and what did the experience of being with all those Spanish bands to make the compilation mean for you?

- Talking about our second album, to say that Map and I got back to join forces again, and in this new stage we also recruited members of SPELLCRAFT Murcilag on guitar, Fulgur on drums and our friend Hastur on bass. Map already had many songs composed and all together we have just outlined this stuff until its recording, the process I would say was simple, since we all knew each other for many years before and that always facilitates this task. I am not going to talk much more about this creation process because it was something very normal and without further incident.

And about the other question, OUIJA has been part of many compilations since our beginnings, that is something basic to make yourself known to more public and it is always an honor to be in them with other bands, both national and outside our territory.

Paco: Midgard we had a chat recently about your latest EP "Selenophile Impia" and you sent me OUIJA’s latest video. What can you say about that EP of yours? Will there be a third album soon?

- Well, if I'm honest, the reception has been brutal, we really hoped that the new EP would be very well received by the media and our followers, since we took time to do everything, both music and the edition of the EP in great detail, so that it does not it was something simple and bland, since after a long lethargy without to release any work, it will not disappoint anyone by being a low-quality stuff. But it has far exceeded our expectations, since the interest shown by both sides, already mentioned before, is being amazing both in our country and abroad, putting of OUIJA back in its place again.

And of course, we are going to release a new album, we are already composing new songs for it. If everything goes well, we will try to release by the middle of next year.

Paco: I also told you I shared that video with an emphasis to the group of Leyendas Del Rock Festival. (As it is the only Spanish festival and their inception is support the national metal in almost all its genres. I asked for bands of our Black metal, like your band, and Empty from Zaragoza as well (I saw them live at the Hammer Fest in Valencia in 2014, together with Nocturnal Depression,  Cauldron, Aposento). Do you have any plans with OUIJA to attend such event someday? What is the situation to make a tour through Spain?

- At the moment, our future plan is to release our new album. Speaking about gigs, just say that so far we are only going to reappear at Bloodfest in Zaragoza. About more gigs and a tour starting next year we will already plan something.

Paco: How do you see the evolution of our Spanish underground (Black/Death metal through the years?

- In my opinion, in recent years bands with a high level have emerged in Spain, which has given us more respect outside of our country, the problem I see is that here many bands move according to the trend that marks the moment. Without having their own identity, what happens to it when that trend goes away, these bands fall into oblivion.

Also say there are bands here that have been faithful to their style for many years and doing a good work, for which these bands achieved good results.

G.: What are your recommendations from Spanish scene (past and present)?

- I would recommend these bands from the past Between the Frost, Spellcraft and current ones I would cite for example Ered, Balmog, Estertor ...

G.: What is the current situation with Spellcraft?

- SPELLCRAFT  has been stopped for a couple of years, at the moment there are no future plans to return with it, but you never know, maybe later we will do something, but for now it is non-viable.

G.: Tobias of Swedish Voodus is an old friend of mine since 2009. What are your favourite releases/tracks of Voodus?

- I think that VOODUS are one of the best current bands in the world, with great potential and a huge future, sincerely I really like all their works. I hope soon to be able to listen to a full-length of them because it will surely be a bombshell.

G.: It’s a bit hard question I know but name us your eternal favourite releases.

- For me it is a very easy question, but I will not mention just one, if not two;

Dissection-Storm of the Light's Bane and  Emperor-Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk.

Both albums are unsurpassed and timeless, posthumous works, with this brief definition is enough.

G.: Beside the music do you have any special hobbies?

- I try to take care of myself so I do sports on a continuous basis, I adore good gastronomy and good wine ... these three things after music would be my hobbies so to call them.

Muchas gracias/thanks a lot Midgard, our best wishes to OUIJA! Send the message to the readers in the end.

- Firstly, I would like to thank you for your interest and support to OUIJA, it has been an honor for me to answer your interview to propagate the name the name of OUIJA in Archangel’s Lantern.

To end the interview, say that we are under a new change in the world order and humanity with each passing day is more stupid, cowardly and submissive. They are not hanging a yoke around our neck so that we live as androids, totally subject to them, those fucking vermin hidden under the great elitist spheres which want to enslave us, turning us into puppets of the system, manipulated and controlled by their dirty hands. Black Metal has always been a music that has fought against all this, breaking everything established, such as its damned and infamous doctrines, take off the blindfold and start to see the shit with which they want to feed and poison us, start to think for yourself and not that they think for you and want to mark your path. It is better to be a hungry and free wolf ... than a fed and subdued lamb. Hails from Spain!!!

Eric Daniels (Grand Supreme Blood Court)

 Interview with Eric Daniels

(Grand Supreme Blood Court,

Soulburn, ex-Asphyx)

Sadistikk Witchfukk webzine (7th of May, 2013)

Questions compiled by Georgius and Sorin Necrotrooper

Hail Eric, Grand Judge Daniels! How are you now? We 've checked out a video about Grand Supreme Blood Court-show at Turock, Essen. How was your concert?

- Hi Georg and Sorin, I am doing fine, thank you! The concert at Turock was awesome, we had a great time overthere, and we also give our gratitude and thanks for the good time towards our fans visiting there.

G.: Grand Supreme Blood Court's debut album, "Bow Down Before The Blood Court", is one of my favourite Death/Doom releases of the last year. What is your most-liked track from your debut? Did you started to write some new riffs for the new material?

- First, thank you very much for you like our debut-album, that’s nice to hear. My personal track I like most is “Circus Of Mass Torment”, the fact was this track was composed as last and due to the fact the CD was becoming too short without this song makes it special also, the lyrics are killer-one, and the structure of the song is like continue and continue, the drive of the song is just great. Of course the other tracks are good as well, but this one I like most. Oh yes, ideas are always flowing around, Alwin and me already have some good material as riffs on the shell, we definitely gonna sort them out together and make a new song. But it’s on an easy going base, first we have to support the album as much we can.

Do You have any plans to make a videoclip for one of G.S.B.C.-tracks?

- It sure crossed our minds to do a videoclip. We like to do a killer live-one. However still the ideas are there, maybe after the release for the second album, not sure about that, but we still like to do one for sure.

G.:You put your killer guitar-riffs on a French death metal band called Affliction Gate's EP, "Shattered Ante Mortem Illusions", last year. Share with us, please, some info about this collaboration!

- Yes that’s true. I was asked by Grief if I would like to do a guitar-solo in one of their songs. I like their material very much, it has the pure soul for real doom/death metal, and that’s what I like and did. I heared it back later at the EP, and we both are very happy with the result. It’s not the way I gonna do often to appear as guest-musician, if the atmosphere gets me from the songs I have the urge to do it, but consider it as an one-time activity. I wish AG succes and good luck with their new EP. Just check it out people I would say.

G.:Last year you also did a guitar solo to one of bands of Rogga Johansson, Megascavenger, on the track "To Revel With Vermin". Would you be so kind tell about it?

- Also correct, Rogga asked me a time ago if I would like to do a solo-part on one of his songs he made, and it was far before the recordings for the Blood Court, so I was thrilled to record it. I did the solo at home, and sended it to him, and he liked it very much. I heared it back later and it was damn cool.

Sorin: Going back to the past you played death/doom for almost 25 years. Some other Netherlandese Death metal bands such as Pestilence, God Dethroned, Gorefest to name a few, changed their style to something new. Would you like to try something new too?

- Well, I realy don’t care what those other bands did or do concerning there playing style, that’s their decision, bit for me and I can say also us, we just play the real doom/death metal how it was and is mentioned to be. I realy cant understand why they will do that, maybe they felt bored of what they were playing, I don’t know, or it was trendy to play death metal. If style will change, believe me, the true soul will be gone. But I don’t speak and judge about other bands, what we know, we just do what we think are best in. We are no super musicians, but people don’t have to try to learn us how the right music is played with heart and soul. There are so much possibilities within our music, be creative, no style to change, or try something new. Its like, bands don’t have to think they are original nowadays, all kinds of metal is invented, the circle is closed. The challenge is how to bring it on an pure way.

G.:You are one of my favourite guitarists of Death metal and I'm always fascinated about your awesome sorrowful solos. Where do you get your inspirations from?

- Thank you very much for the kind and nice words, that makes my day! Well, back years ago around 1989 when I joined ASPHYX we were reharsing for the 2 songs 7” Mutilating Process, at the rehearsal I just played some long notes inside the song, it wasn’t hearable, but when we listened back the tape of the rehearsal, Bob called me and said, hey Eric what did you do there on the song..it sounds amazing. I was realy flattered about his words. I cant play fast soloing, only by tremolo, I like to abuse that thing to the core, but normal fast soloing I hate to play, so I decided just to play the solo’s very slow and doomy, it went super and it feels great to do. It gives more atmosphere. I play those solos only with a digital delay pedal, nothing special. It wasn’t planned, it just felt to play the solos this way. It are the base-riffs behind the solos which give me inspiration. When the right doom-riff comes up, the doom soloing is a perfect match for it. Not technical skills for that but I can say with all the feeling I have inside my body I play em.

Were you in contact with bands from Eastern Europe? Can you recommend us such bands from this area?

- As you know I was off from the metal-scene a long time, almost 9 years, so I had to dig up in a short time now almost 3 years to hear good metal-bands again. Sorry, you have to fill me in here for the Eastern Europe-bands, cause its sometimes hard to find the right and good bands. I follow the stream of facebook and when I am curious about a youtube vid, I click it. I hardly listen to music from LP’s or CD’s, I use the internet a lot. That’s one of the progress matters since the last years. The digital period is nice to develop and follow. The band I realy like is: Coffins, the tank rolling sound, the voice, all the right and pure ingredients of death metal. We play with them on the Party San. Hope I can buy a shirt from em there, looking forward to that!!

Which are your all-time favourite albums?

- I give you my all-time favourite top 5:

Possessed - Seven Churches

Venom - Welcome to hell

Bathory - Hammerheart

Riot - Fire down under

Sacred Blade - Of The Sun + Moon

As we noticed you are into movies also. Which ones are all-time faves and what movies do you wait this year?

- Owhh I have so many movies I like, this would be a very long list, but I give you also my top 5 favourite movies:

Evil Dead (original)

The Exorcist

The Shining (original)

Halloween part 1 and 2

Texas Chainsaw Massacre part 1

I wait for Evil Dead the remake and the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Also the new Die Hard I like to watch too. All this movies I haven’t seen yet, but for those movies I take time to watch them.

Could you recommend us some kind of Dutch tobaccoes and coffee?

- Well, I can only give you recommends about the things I like myself, it’s a personal taste, I like “van nelle export” tobacco, handrolling, I am not a cigaret-freak, I don’t like the filters on cigarets, and I like douwe egberts coffee fresh made, however I use my senseo coffee maker most of the time, in the morning strong tasting pads, to wake up better.

What recommendations do you have from Dutch cuisine?

- Stew, kale with sausage, Dutch winterfood I like most, however I am not an kitchen-prince, I like Italian food the most, pasta, pizza, ect, but since my heart-attack 2 years ago I managed to live more healthy, it’s something to face. I like lots of different food, not much I don’t like to say. A nice dinner, tasty, I can enjoy that very much.

Dank u wel, Eric, your message to the readers of Sadistik Witchfukk webzine?

- Graag gedaan and good-luck with your webzine!! Your Dutch is great! To the GSBC readers of Sadistik Witchfukk i say, thanks for your support to the Blood Court..you RULE !!, and towards the GSBC-unknown readers I say…check the album out, we sentences you to…pure brutal Death Metal !! Charly Steinhauer (Paradox)

 Interview with Charly Steinhauer (Paradox)

Hello Charly I’m so honoured to talk to you on my small blog. First of all let me to congratulate you for fantastic album “Heresy II: End of a Legend”. Would you be so kind to enlighten the readers about songwriting, recording process and lyrics of your new LP?

- Hi and thanks for the compliment on the new album. I appreciate it!

It is the most versatile and greatest that I have composed so far. My personal masterpiece, but I also know that many wished for a pure old school album, but then I would have had to copy myself. I have managed the balancing act between old and new school well I think. There are countless riffs and harmonies on this album and something for everyone, but not an album for one run. This is a long journey You have to listen very often to it, to enjoy the whole atmosphere, because there is always something new to discover in the background.

I composed one song after the other until I had worked through all the titles that the text writer Peter Vogt had given me for the concept. About the story.. In contrast to Heresy I, which is based on a true story, Heresy II is a fictional story. In 1244 at the siege of Montsegur, two groups of Knights were tasked with removing the ‘Cathar Treasure. The story tells of the dangerous journey these two groups endured, and through visions they are getting told of the myth of Jesus Christ, that the real messiah was in fact John the Baptist …a disciple of Jesus. In fact our modern Pope wears the ring of John, the Fisher of men.

As I’m an old supporter of Paradox (since in the end of 80s) for me it just awesome feeling that your old friend, drummer Axel Blaha joined Paradox again. How did happen his comeback? I saw other changes in Paradox as well: Tell us more about your current line-up please.

Then I first would like to thank you for your support over the years!

Axel has always been my best friend in private life. He was indirectly involved in many PARADOX productions because he visited me regularly and I asked him for his opinion on the new songs. He often gave tips. When he stopped playing the drums in 1991 nobody would have thought that he would come back again, but already during the PANGEA sessions he rekindled a passion that made him try again. He bought a drum kit and practiced like an obsession. Today he plays better than ever. When the position on drums for the new album was vacant, he decided to return to PARADOX. I founded the band with him and we want to end it together at some point. I was also in regular contact with Christian Münzner and Olly Keller because we are friends and both were also ready to return. I'm happy to have a great and consistent band line-up again and we have a very good atmosphere within the band.

Brilliant artwork of “Heresy II: End of a Legend” created for you American illustrator Travis Smith. I’ve written in my Hungarian review that in my opinion his awesome work is totally fitting to your music. How did you meet him? Do you have any plans to co-work with him later then for Paradox?

I came into contact with him through his manager. Travis showed interest in working together with PARADOX. Then everything went very quickly and easily.

Since I'm also a big OPETH fan and Travis Smith did their album covers, it was clear that I wanted to hire him for PARADOX as well. I like his mystical style. What he has drawn at NEVERMORE and many others is also awesome. He is an absolute professional and he communicates regularly during production. He has a lot of ideas that he brings with him and he listens to the music for which he develops the appropriate cover art. He perfectly visualizes the partly gloomy and melancholy mood of the new PARADOX album. Yes, we would love to work with him again.

I’ve got your message as Paradox completed the saga with Heresy II where the lyrics were written by Peter Vogt (who wrote his lyrics for Paradox on “Heresy”). Maybe you will continue to cooperate with him on new Paradox album(s) in the future?

I assume that Peter Vogt will also write the lyrics for the next PARADOX album. It is very pleasant to work with him and we understand each other blindly. Reason enough to do it again. He also signaled to me that he would like to write texts for us again. So why not. Never change a winning team.

Which guitar players and singers influenced you back in the day and do you have some favourite ones in our days?

- Of course, I was most influenced by James Hetfield, whom I got to know personally in 1984. I even have Cliff Burton's autograph. There are singers like Erik AK from FLOTSAM & JETSAM, Joey Belladonna (ANTHRAX) or Dave Meniketti (Y&T) who have also influenced me. I also love John  Arch (FATES WARNING) and who I absolutely have to mention is the sadly missed Warrel Dane (NEVERMORE, SANCTUARY). He really inspired me. LEPROUS is a band that has nothing to do with Thrash metal but whose dark melody lines also inspired me on the new album.
My favorite guitarists are Jeff Loomis, Jeff Waters, Gary Holt, my band mate Christian Münzner, but also people like Steve Vai or Eddie Van Halen.

As I’ve mentioned I’m an old fan of Paradox and when I’ve studied in Budapest in 1990/1991 I was so happy after the buying “Heresy” cassette and could not waited to return to college and put to tape deck to listen to that amazing album. How do you remember those old glorious days of Paradox?

It would go beyond the scope to talk about all the events here. I could write a book about it and maybe one day I will too. When I say everything was better in the past it sounds like a cliche, but actually everything was better in the 80s. The heavy metal community was a family and there was a solid bond among the fans. I miss that today when I read through all these hateful comments on the internet. I can only shake my head. It has become superficial and fast-living. In the past one good album after the other was published and nowadays a lot and bands don't spend so much time on one album because they have to go on tour in order to be able to make a living from the music.
As far as PARADOX is concerned, we were really lucky to be in the right place at the right time. We were part of the bands that brought American Thrash metal to Europe. But also independent Thrash bands like KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, SODOM were there from the beginning. BTW, we played our first tour with TANKARD. The highlights were, of course, the first record deal, album of the month, demo of the year, the Dynamo Open Air with over 20,000 viewers and being Germany`s Newcomer # 1.

According to Encyclopaedea Metallum you are involved in bands as Exorchrist and Brutal Godz. What is the current situation with these ones?

- Well, EXORCHRIST is a project by Daxx, the former VENDETTA singer/guitarist, to which I contributed a few solos. Nothing regular. I haven't spoken to Daxx for a long time, but if he needs me I will again make a guest contribution. He has also written lyrics for 2 PARADOX albums. There will always be a connection and friendship between us.

As for BRUTAL GODZ, the story is incomplete. The band consisted of Uwe Lulis, who now plays for ACCEPT, and the two brothers Alex and Oliver Holzwarth and me on the vocals. There is a demo with 10 unreleased songs. The style is difficult to grasp. Totally bizarre metal with Thrash and prog influences. After a dispute between Uwe and Oliver, the split came about and the project was over.

If I’m not mistaken you are from a very old and nice German city Würzburg. (Unfortunately I’ve never been in your beautiful city so far). What interesting places, museums etc are your recommendations to visit me then?

- First the landmark of Würzburg. The "Festung (Fortress) Marienberg" is a former fortification and a former prince-bishop's castle on the Marienberg 100 meters above the "Main", a river that flows through the city
Then we have the "Residenz Würzburg" with a large park behind the building. It is a huge baroque palace on the outskirts of the city center of Würzburg, which was built from the beginning to the middle of the 18th century.
Then there is the "Käppele". Käppele is the popular name of the pilgrimage church "Mariä Visitation on Nikolausberg in Würzburg" . The "Alte Mainbrücke" is the oldest bridge over the "Main" river in Würzburg and a landmark of the city. The building, which began in the 15th century, was Würzburg's only river crossing until 1886 I could list many more sights for you. We have many tourists in our beautiful city. Lots of sidewalk cafes as well.

When we started our own Death metal band called Castrum in 1994, I’ve written to the track “Brand” my short lyrics about Würzburg witch trials. (I was possessed and still am) to read books about witches, witch-hunts). Maybe in your next albums you will use that interesting and very sad topic of Würzburg for new Paradox-track(s)? In my humble opinion it would be really great to listen to Paradox music with lyrics about witch trials of Würzburg. What do you think?

- Würzburg is a Christian city with more than 60 churches. It is hard to imagine which crimes the Church did a few hundred years ago. Many witch trials took also place in Bamberg (a neighboring town) and you didn't have to do much to be convicted as a heretic. Many humans was burned at the stake for no reason. If a woman had red hair it was enough reason for her to get condemned as a witch.

Since we have already sung a lot about this topic elsewhere with the two HERESY albums, we will not take up this related story again. I can only confirm. One person`s religion is another person`s Heresy.
Religion has always been a reason for war. Everyone has the right to believe in what makes them strong, but not dictate to others what they have to believe.

Alongside the music do you have interesting hobbies? What are your favourite books/authors and movies/actors/actresses?

- I rarely read books, but rather read music or video game magazines. I love Playstation games. In addition to music, this is my biggest hobby and a good way to balance myself out in other worlds.
I love history and study a lot on the internet what has happened on our planet. I keep getting information about special events and like to research details about it. Sometimes for days.
I also like to go for a walk in nature to get some fresh air and to exercise, because my two big hobbies are only possible while sitting. Of course, I like to meet friends or visiting concerts. Unfortunately, that was not possible during the pandemic. In general, I am also a big fan of movies. My favorite actors are Christoph Waltz, Brad Pitt, Leonardo Di Caprio, Jack Nicholson, Liam Neeson, Al Pacino. Kevin Bacon and many more. But there are also good German actors like Moritz Bleibtreu. I like sophisticated thrillers, true-story-based films, dramas and horror movies.

Are there any interesting bands from your area what you could recommend to the readers to listen to it?

- At the beginning of the 80s there were quite a few bands from our region in Bavaria, Germany. Our friends from VENDETTA was one of them. We spent a lot of time together and partied. It was a great time. Nowadays I am not so much concerned with the regional scene. There are a lot of bands but I can't name a specific one that knocked me off my feet. Most musicians are very good at their instrument these days, but the most important thing is the song itself. If that is not good then all the technology is useless. But it is also much more difficult for new bands to build a successful career, because everything has already existed and the music cannot be reinvented. The market is also flooded. There is more quantity than quality. It's sad but true, but the most important thing is that heavy metal survived the 90s and became immortal.

I know it is a very hard question but could you name 10 or more your favourite albums?

- There are many bands whose albums have influenced or inspired me. I can list a few of them for you.
01. Exodus - Boded by Blood
02. Metallica - Right The Lightning / Master Of Puppets
03. Forbidden - Forbidden Evil / Twisted Into Form
04. Flotsam & Jetsam - Doomsday For The Deceiver / No Place For Disgrace
05. Metal Church - Metal Church
06. Slayer - Show No Mercy / Reign In Blood
07. Opeth - Blackwater Park / Deliverance / Ghost Reveries / Watershed
08. Anthrax - Fistful Of Metal / Spreading The Desease
09. Motörhead - Overkill / Ace Of Spades
10. Raven - Rock Until Your Drop / Wiped Out
11. Mercyful Fate - Melissa / Don't Break The Oath
12. AC / DC - Let There be Rock / Back In Black
13. Helstar - Remnatns Of War / Nosferatu
14. Nevermore - Dead Heart In A Dead World / The Politics Of Ecstasy
15. Testament - The Legacy
16. Anvil - Metal On Metal
17. Evile - The Skull
18. Leprous - Malina
19. Vector - Outer Isolation
20. The whole NWOBHM
..... and many many more

Vielen Dank Charly, it was a pleasure to make this interview with you. Wish you all the best and I really hope to see Paradox live and meet you personally very soon. Send some thoughts in the end please.

- I have to thank you for your support over the years and would like to say cheerz to all readers. I hope you like the new album "HERESY II - End Of A Legend". It deserves your support!

Where and when the Necromancer was born?

- In Hyvinkää/Finland in 1986, the original members are Niko, Ana, Maxi and Mason.

- Necromancer name is based on witchcraft and it was we think a good idea to take that to our horde.

Do you have any favourite bands?

- Yes, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and many more.

 What your  lyrics are about?

- Our lyrics are not real stuff, they tell supernatural things. We are also not a rebel band, and we don´t have a social point of view or similar like that. Magic is the main interest to everyone in the horde.

"Necromancer made a new demo tape in studio and listening to the tape reminds me Slayer and Stone. It is worth buying or ordering, you won´t miss with it anything." - Jukka Räsänen, 1988.
