In Memoriam Kate Szíjártó (07.V.1987-21.I.2010 R.I.P.)

Rock-Ness Dossier
In Memory of Kate 'Outsider' Szíjártó
 (07.V.1987 - 21.I.2010 R.I.P.)
(I, Georgius asked Her in February, 2009)

When and where did you born?

- I was on born on the 7-th of May, 1987 in Beregszász (Berehove) Transcarpathia (Ukraine).

As a kid who would you prefer to be?

- It’s a rather difficult question for me as my wants and needs have been changing almost every single day. At first, as every kid I wanted to follow in my parents’ footsteps, thus I wanted to work in the police department. Luckily, I’ve changed my mind very quickly. I also wanted to become a singer, a scientist, a writer, a doctor, etc.

What has been realized from this?

- Nothing so far as I’m still studying. But I can say I’m a little bit of a singer and a bit of a writer.

my Dearest Sunshine Kate, 22.IX.2009

Your childhood's determinative album-experience?

- It’s hard to say now because my parents were rockers, they fed me with Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin stuff. I don’t remember lullabies, my mom and dad when putting me to bed turned on some of the above things.

What was the first concert you have seen?

- I guess I’ll avoid mentioning some minor shows but for one, back in 2006 I was at a gig headlined by Castrum. But the first greatest show I saw was Satyricon.

(Kate (R.I.P.), Cornelius of Castrum and Kat, around 2008)

If you could compile a band without any limitation, who would play there?

- A very exciting question, in fact. If not to pay attention to the style and some other nuances, the perfect band would look like this:
Frost (Satyricon) – drums
Trey Azagthoth (Morbid Angel) – guitar
Ivar Bjørnson (Enslaved) – guitar
Reyash (Vader) – bass
Dead (Mayhem) - vox

What inspiration led you to this path?

- In my case the fact that I’m a small piece of the Underground movement is taken for granted. The only thing that can explain it is, to my mind, almost 22 years of constant development.

April, 2009, photo was taken by me - GF

Do you have any hobby?

- Of corpse! First of all, it’s music. For me music embraces not only all branches of metal, I’m also fond of classical music, folk and sometimes some industrial tunes as well. I can’t imagine my life without books, travelling, photography and writing concert reports.

Ultimate albums of all time?

- Well, in my opinion, these are ”Blessed are the Sick” by Morbid Angel, “Necroticism - Descanting The Insalubrious” by Carcass, “Panzerfaust” by Darkthrone, “Storm Of The Light's Bane” by Dissection, “Frost” by Enslaved, “Epic (The Poetry Of War)” by Kataklysm, “Om” by Negură Bunget, “The Shadowthrone” by Satyricon, “Impressions in Blood” by Vader and “Forever Underground” by Vital Remains.

(Kate and Kat with Napalm Death-guys after their awesome show in Uzhhorod/Ungvár, I.23.2009)

Ultimate books of all time?

- First of all I would name the Poetic Edda, then go ”The Chronicles of Amber” written by Roger Zelazny, Goethe’s ”Faust”, all the fairy tales by the Grimm brothers, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”  by Ken Kesey and of course every masterpiece written by Edgar Poe.

Ultimate movies of all time?

- I’m not really into films but here I’d like to distinguish all those masterly works of Alfred Hitchcock, these are “The Birds”, “Psycho” and others.

(our botanical garden, photo was taken by my Kate, 10.VI.2009)

Ultimate personalities of all time?

- Vlad Țepeș, Hammurapi, Alexander the Great, Egil Skallagrimmson.

Is there a life-philosophy or religion which stays close to you?

- Actually there is no but on my way up I try to follow the words of Alexander the Great,
”There is nothing impossible for him who will try.”

Botanical Garden, 10.VI.2009, Castrum Ungh

What is your opinion on illegal music downloads?

- It causes no problems for bands like Metallica, but because of this a number of bands and phenomenal musicians are facing “extinction”. They have to give up playing music due to the lack of financing. Thus we’re losing talented people. This is simply a kick in the face of the Underground.

Favorite food and drink?

- Pizza and beer.

Favorite writer?

- Roger Zelazny, Oscar Wilde and John Fowles.

Favorite actor and actress?

- I have no as I’m not really interested in cinema and theatre.

If you would be 16 years old with such experience, what would you start to do with your life?

- I think I’d try to be more organized and maybe started my own Metal Zine.

What future would you predict for humanity?

- The whole human race will be eradicated by itself. I don’t think the situation will improve in the future. The ancient Romans used to say, “Homo homini monstrum”, which means “People are beasts to each other”.

If there would be a question to yourself (that in your opinion was missed from the questions), what would be that? (Please answer it!)

- In what century would you like to live?
Either in the 15-th or in the 16-th.

Castrum:The Essence of the Past
(Kate Odinsbarn June 15th, 2008)

CASTRUM’s “The Essence of the Past” DVD was compiled by Cornelius from old archive shows and released in December 2007. The DVD is divided into three parts, these are: Scenery, Visionary and Imagery.
Scenery contains 3 live shows: live @ Animation Fest '96 (Beregovo, Ukraine), two live gigs @ Kathedra, both took place in 1997 in Uzhgorod, Ukraine. There is also a bonus live show from Hust, Ukraine in 1998. These live gigs are a backward look at the Transcarpathian metal scene anno 1996-1998. A very good way to compare the band as well as their fans with today’s situation. Those who had no opportunity to check out Castrum live 10 years ago can at least get an idea about what the band sounded and looked like.
The Visionary part contains three official video clips: “Tears of Eternal Expiation”, “Gilles de Rais (Le bon Sire)”, “Calvary Grandier”. By the way, these tracks are taken from “Pleasure in the Deeds of Horror” demo tape which was released in 1996. Unfortunately, these tracks haven’t been played live lately so young fans haven’t got a slightest idea about these great creations of Castrum.
Imagery features a photo gallery slide show of archive photos dating 1995-1998. You can have a look at the former members of Castrum and see the way Cornelius has changed during the past decade.
One can also find all the demos the band has released including “Burial of the Affection” (rehearsal 1996), “Flames by Impiety” (demo 1996), “Pleasure in the Deeds of Horror” (demo 1996) and two rehearsals of 1997 and 1999 respectively.
Have you ever heard of Chamos? It’s Castrum’s side-project with the same line-up. The guys experimented with Black metal and this way the “Hellish Reveries” demo appeared in 1997. The demo consisting of two tracks can also be found here.
This self-released DVD with such a splendid design will attract everyone. And your PC will be grateful as well for the DVD contains wallpapers for your desktop. All in all, this is when the dream of every single Castrum fan comes true! It’s the history of Castrum, the band’s development step by step. Note, those who don’t know the past, won’t have the future. Get “The Essence of the Past” or die in ignorance! Long live Death metal!!!

Eugene Stapler (Hulla)

 Interview with Eugene Stapler (Hulla)

Hail my old friend, Eugene! You are very welcome to my humble metal blog, Archangel’s Lantern! First of all, tell the readers, how and when you started to enjoy metal music and the scene. Which one(s) was/were your first musical stuff (tape/CD/vinyl)?

- Greetings to you, Georgius, and to all readers of the Archangel’s Lantern! As a child I was a big fan of The Beatles and Kiss (I’m still now). At home I always listened to the classics of hard- and progressive rock. By 2001, when I was 9 years old, my dad’s friend recorded a cassette with several tracks from “...AJFO” Metallica ‘88 on one side and “Vulgar Display of Power”, Pantera ‘92 respectively on the other. This music amazed me and IMAO it is still the standard of heavy guitar sound! A little bit later, I bought these CDs, listened to them to holes, and as I got older, I discovered other classic Heavy, Speed, Thrash, Death metal and Grindcore bands. In 2004, I attended the first heavy concert in my life, in Uzhhorod – the second Death Metal Assault festival, organized by the notorious Castrum guitarist Kornel Kontros (and part-time Hulla guitarist these days). Then the aforementioned Castrum set the heat (to which you seem to have some relation, right? Joking 😊 Globalized Abstruse, Mental Demise, and, for the first time in our town, a foreign extreme band Parricide from Poland. It was the first time in my life I encountered such a genre as brutal Death-Grind live and life was never the same again!

When did you start play the drums? What was/were your first bands? Which musicians/bands influenced you back in the days? What are your favourite drummers nowadays? Beside the drums you play the other instruments?

- At the age of 9, my parents sent me to a music school to study classical guitar and piano, but since I was familiar with heavy music by that time, I also started to get very attracted to drums. I have a musical family, my dad is a guitarist, but he also plays drums a bit, so he showed me a couple of basic drum beats. Little by little I started trying to shoot the drum parts of Kiss, AC/DC, Metallica and everything that I was listening at home. I also tried playing their riffs on the guitar. In the summer of 2004, I already rehearsed with a local power metal band, but I never performed live with them. At the end of 2005, I met Kornel, and the next year, I already gave my first heavy concert and a two-week tour around Ukraine as a session drummer for Castrum. The dream came true!

I was influenced by a large number of musicians of different styles, not only drummers, but also guitarists, bassists, and how the chemistry develops between them; classical music and, to some extent, musical education, I guess. In extreme music, of course, Ulrich, Lombardo, Benante, Vinnie Paul, Scott Travis, Nicko McBrain, Bill Andrews, Gene Hoglan (all Death drummers are great!), Pete Sandoval, Nick Barker, drummer of Mental Demise Yevhen Shikarevskiy, Doni from Castrum… I can’t remember them all now. From alternative – David Silveria, John Otto… and also Peter Criss, Ian Paice, John Bonham… can’t count everyone. But as I said before, I was always more attracted about how drummers “coexist” with other musicians in a song and how it all works in a band.

You can hear me playing guitar in the Grindcore project Degradatus and in crust-punk band Displease on bass, backing vox, etc.

Let’s talk about your Goregrind horde namely Hulla. Who came up with the idea to use a Hungarian name for the band? What should we know about the beginnings of Hulla?

- Nowadays it’s hard to come up with some original name for the band, especially in the style of Goregrind 😊. So I decided to dig a little into other languages. This is symbolic, because in some way we continue the work of the legendary Liverpool four (this is not about The Beatles, ha-ha).

After more than a 10-year break due to my absence from Uzhhorod, I decided to “shake the old days”. I had some riffs and contacted Kornel (besides Castrum we also played with him in the Goregrind formation called Vulvulator in the late 2000s…) and in February-March 2021 we started rehearsing this stuff. A little later, Robik, my sidekick friend, who also once played guitar in Vulvulator and grunted in another Groovegrind formation ЙYЙ, was invited to sing. In summer of the same year, we played our debut gig in the Uzhhorod Amphitheater as a trio, and a little later the line-up was replenished with bassist Valera aka “Headless”, also a very good guy and musician.

Hulla released an EP “Supermassive Black Wound” in July, 2021 and in our private conversation you told me the story behind the cover. Share with the readers all the important information of that EP.

- We decided not to shelve the matter and quickly bungled this 5-track EP. I recorded drums, some guitars (in half with Kornel) and bass. Then we gathered at Robik’s house and all little by little contributed to the vocal disgrace 😊. Tracking of the material went well and fun, but we had some issues with mastering. (UPD: Alex, who mixed "The Recovery", has already made a new killer remaster, so it will be released on cassettes very soon by GorySound Productions! Check it out!)

(Hulla - "Supermassive Black Wound" EP (2023 Remaster)

In the end of May, 2022 you released another EP “The Recovery” and the line-up of Hulla completed with a bass player, Valery. How went the recording-process? What are the responses from underground media and fans so far?

- This time we took a more serious approach to production. Everyone recorded their own parts. We recorded drums and bass back in December 2021, then Kori recorded guitars in January-February, but at the end of February, as we all know, this fucking war began and we, like many others, fell into a complete slump for several months. Toward mid-April, Robik and I decided that we need to finish what we started and recorded his vocals. This time the mixing and mastering was handled by an experienced guy from Paris, Alex Sedin (Ghostalgy Productions) and we were pleased with the result!
Thanks to Grindwar Channel and Gore Grinder we got some promo and mostly good reviews for the release on YouTube. I also want to mention our good-old friend Valentin (Rotova Porojnina Records) from Kyiv, who released “The Recovery” on cassettes and to express our gratitude to him for this. In addition, Kornel has also released both EPs on his GorySound Productions, also on cassettes, with feature-rich design. Anyone interested, please contact us!

Hulla - "The Recovery" EP (2022)

Unfortunately I had no chance to see you live in our hometown yet but I hope it would be happened very soon. Where did you play concerts beside Uzhhorod/Ungvár? Your experiences?

- I also really hope that we will be able to do at least a small gig, because it’s good to have releases, but we are a live band and are best perceived live, especially Robik (vocals), hehe. We managed to play only a few shows, in addition to our hometown, two concerts in Kyiv (at festivals like Threshout and Grind Zajebis’ Party) and one in Lviv (Grind Noise Assault by Antenna crew). Those were great gigs!

You are a very talented musician and it was a pleasure to play with you Castrum’s “Gilles de Rais” on the XXth anniversary show in 2014. How do you remember the time when you played live with Castrum in 2006? What are your favourite Castrum tracks from their LPs?

- Thank you, Georgius, for the kind words! I was also very pleased to work with you, this is one of my favorite tracks, and in general, I really love “Pleasure…”, there is some special atmosphere on it, when I listen to it, I am transferred at the same time to Uzhhorod 1996, and to the Middle Ages! This release deserves a separate discussion; it stands a little apart from the rest of the releases. When we were kids we watched that video a million times. As for the rest of Castrum’s stuff, personally for me all the songs are hits, because the first death metal bands that I heard were Deicide, Death and Castrum! CDs from 2001 and 2002… The first track I heard was “Hatenourisher” and it blew my head off. What else? “Brand”, “The Gate…”, “Sinister Omens”, “Suffocating Thugs”… classics. “Phenomenonsense” was a little confusing for me at first, but it doesn’t come in from the first listening, you need to listen to it several times and experience it! It’s a slightly different Castrum, I think. Now I listen to it with pleasure and every time new things and parts open up to me. By the way, a couple of years ago I realized that apart from the early cassettes I didn’t have a single CD available and I decided to correct this situation. It’s funny that no one in Uzhhorod had them for sale, but I’m glad I found them in the online store in the collections of fans from different parts of Ukraine! So now I have everything in stock, hehehe!
About my first-ever gig, it was cool, although I was wildly worried then and, I have to admit, I played shitty then, hehe! Especially when I found out that Werkoff was in the hall, haha! And people where shouted “Where is Doni?? Bring him back!”. I did not disrupt the performance, and that’s good!

(Cornelius of Castrum, Eugene Stapler and me, September, 2014-G/)

You were involved and still are in different bands, projects. Enlighten us your past and current activity in these ones.

- As we have mentioned before, it’s Сastrum (death metal, 2006), Vulvulator (goregrind, 2006-2009), Skruta (2010-2011, grindcore), Rise of Cadia (2008-2011, deathcore), The Symbioz, Displease (2009-2013, hc punk, d-beat, also as a bass player), Rock-H (2009, folk hard rock), Battle Axe Culture (post-punk/indie, 2016-2018), ЙYЙ (groovegrind, from 2015), Degradatus (grindcore, 2020-2021) and many other bands. I also play in various academic musical bands and orchestras as a drummer and percussionist, this is my job.

Do you have any special hobbies besides playing the drums/music? What are your favorite albums, books and movies?

- Nothing special, mostly music related. Favorite books – biographies of favorite bands and musicians, biopics and documentaries.

(Eugene Stapler, Cornelius, Eugene Ryabchenko and me, July, 2021-G/)

You lived in Vietnam for a while. Would you be so kind to tell us more about these years?

- I lived in Vietnam for over a year, my job was to play with a band in an amusement park for 3 hours a day. Very cool job, a lot of free time. What can I say? Sun, sea, great food, scooter rides, loyal locals, low prices relative to our average salary… I really enjoyed, but because of the fucking pandemic, everything was shut down and I returned home.

Hulla - "Fatal Hobby"

Thanks a lot for the interview my friend, wishing you all the best in your musician activity and your private life as well. To complete the interview, send some thoughts in the end.

- Thank you again, Georgius, and the readers! I wish all of us peace, love and many great releases and concerts!

Cornelius (Castrum, Encomium)

Interview with Cornelius (Castrum, Encomium-zine, ex-Chamos, ex-Vulvulator)
done by Sorin Necrotrooper, 13.VIII.2018
The last interview ever
for Sadistik Witchfukk webzine (2012-2018)

Hello, Cornelius! As this is your first interview for Sadistik Witchfukk, introduce yourself to the readers of the zine!

- Hail to all the dedicated readers of Sadistik Witchfukk and thank you, Sorin, for your interest. Since 1994 I play guitar for the Transcarpathian Death Metal horde Castrum, since 1998 I am the editor of Encomium ‘zine, organized a hell of a bunch of gigs for the “underground” masses in Uzhgorod.

How did you got into metal? Can you describe your "rock/metal" journey until you formed Castrum? And if you can describe the metal scene at that time in your country?

- I was eleven when I got my first cassettes with bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Krokus, Magnum and stuff like that. I’ve been trading tapes and records with my school-mates at that time and shortly after I discovered the genres of Thrash & Death Metal, such bands as Destruction, Kreator, Sodom, Testament, Slayer, Exodus, Sadus, Death, Obituary, Deicide and Morbid Angel just to name a few. But the real impel to form my own band was caused by the Swedish Death Metal movement around 1991-1992. We’ve massively dived in with my friends into the first releases by Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Unleashed, etc. It was magical back then. The metal scene was pretty variegated at that time as being a deathrasher I hung out with fans of glam rock, heavy metal or other less extreme subgenres of rock & metal, but it was just amazing. If there was a gig with any kind of local rock/metal act, not mentioning the possibility to go and watch the show of some band from abroad, most probably everybody was there, huge crowd and family-like atmospheres. It was also a good reason to meet other metal fans (from other regions) and do some trades of tapes, posters, magazines, etc.

In 1994 Castrum came into being. Can you summarize your biography so far?

- Yeah, sure. Castrum was founded in 1994. The early days marked three demo releases on the band’s account: “Burial of the Affection”, “Flames by Impiety” & “Pleasure in the Deeds of Horror”, all of them came out in 1996. In 1999 the band signed a deal with Ukrainian underground label Metal Force Records. The first result of this alliance was an MC release of the above mentioned demos unleashed under the banner of “The Leading Spirit of Medieval Tortures”, which was followed by the band’s debut album “Hatenourisher” in the fall of 2000. Shortly after this tape release the band signed a deal with Canadian Bloodbucket Productions. Thus three full-length CDs were successfully spread into the underground masses, namely “Hatenourisher” in 2001, “Mysterious Yet Unwearied” in 2002 and “Phenomenonsense” in 2006. After a few member changes the line-up of Castrum finally became stable in 2012. It consists of the relentless forces of Cornelius (vocals/guitar), Victor (bass) & Eugene (drums). To celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary a compilation CD titled as “MediEvaluation” was released in 2014 by the band’s long-time label Bloodbucket Productions! The band’s fourth full-length album is still in process. It is going to be the fiercest and most sophisticated one! So watch out!!!

You also did a demo under the name Chamos, with the same line-up as Castrum, back in 1997, called "Hellish Reveries". Do you see it as a separate release from Castrum?
Will it ever be re-released?

- It was a separate release by all means. I was pretty productive back then and I’ve got some riffs that I didn’t imagine in the repertory of Castrum, so we started this side-project. We did that 2-song demo in 1997 and that’s it. Will it be ever released officially I can’t say it as of yet, but never say never, right? So time shall tell us…

Back to Castrum. I know that you recorded a follow-up to "Phenomenonsense", but it never saw the light of the day. Can you enlighten us about it and if any progress in this direction has been done lately? Will it include the Possessed cover ("Death Metal"-ed)?

- Yes, all the instruments have been recorded quite a while for our 4th studio album, we’ve recorded 11 songs in total, I even did some raw pre-production mixes, but unfortunately I couldn’t proceed with the recordings of the vocals parts thence. Somehow I always felt not ready to do it, my bad, I know. The Possessed cover was something exceptional, we did it pretty fast, even if I am not happy with how my vocals turned out there, but I really wanted to make it happen. That song is available exclusively on the “Seven Burning Churches” a tribute to Possessed CD.

As far as I remember, Castrum was about to play in Bucharest, Romania, in 2011, as an opening-act for the Impaled Nazarene concert. However, the ImpNaz tour was cancelled and Castrum didn't got to play. How were you chosen to be one of those opening bands and why you did not got to play or to postpone it? Have you received any other offers to play here?

- Right, that gig was announced exactly for 1st of February, 2010. We’ve been on tour with our Polish friends from Underdark and I clearly remember that we did our first show in Lviv and we were on our way to Debrecen (Hungary) when I received an sms from the promoter that Impaled Nazarene had to cancel their appearance, so the whole event was just cancelled immediately. Due to Coro of Axa Valaha Productions we’ve got the opportunity, but it didn’t happen in the end. I knew Coro for a long time, we’ve been in contact from time to time, so I suppose it just felt right to bring us once there, he is a hard worker and true supporter of the underground movement. We’ve got other invites as well, but somehow I always had to refuse them, sometimes because of bad timing and other times just because of my health issues.

According to Encyclopaedia Metallum, you also played guitar in Vulvulator and drums in ЙYЙ. Can you tell us about these collaborations?

- Yes, that’s right. I was a member of Vulvulator from 2006 to 2008. Played all the guitars & bass parts for the debut full-length “Obscenario” (2007) and for the “IV Way Split” (2008). Those were funny times, but had to quit, because the evolving musical path wasn’t mine any more. ЙYЙ was a band formed by local guys in 2016, they had 2 songs written, but they didn’t have a drummer at the time. I’ve been always fond of playing drums, so I offered them to try out myself in that position. In a short period of time we’ve completed around dozen songs and the same year the band had its only live show with me. Again, had to quit, due to the same old story, the music they wanted to play further wasn’t my cup of tea. Now they’re functioning as a studio project.

Apart of your metal activities, I know that you released an ambient album called "The Mindscape Seeker" under the name Kornel Kontros. Can you enlighten us about it? How was the feedback so far?

- You are very-well informed. I have a piano at home since ever, so I was always sitting and trying out myself creating different harmonies, moods, melodies and stuff like that. The time has come to record all those little pieces in 2015 when I finally borrowed a synthesizer for that purpose. The feedback I received was always positive and mostly from people close to me, and it is totally OK with me, as this release was meant personal. Its follow-up is in progress as well; it will be more medieval-like with the use of acoustic guitars in front.

Do you plan to perform it live?

- Good question. I really have plans in my mind to make those pieces happen to played live too, but still searching for the right musicians.

I can't help but realize that your instrumental material seems to be connected with the "Tears of Eternal Expiation" intro. Do you have any other tracks written in this style that will see the light of the day? Or, perhaps a follow-up to "The Mindscape Seeker"?

- Definitely good comparison. As you’ve already noticed I did quite a few instrumental tracks for the Castrum releases so far, but the ones which were selected for “The Mindscape Seeker” kind of didn’t fit with the new approach Castrum musically stands for, so I better published them under my name. The new tracks will be atmospheric- and ambient-like too, but with a touch of medievalism.

You also run the fanzine Encomium, which has become a webzine for some years. Can you tell us about it and if there will ever be any printed issues in the future? How was the reaction for the printed zine of the 4th issue?

- Encomium is one of the oldest English-written ‘zines out of the Ukraine. Totally dedicated to the extreme forms of underground music. The first 3 issues (1/98, 2/99 & 3/2001) were pro-printed on A4 format pages. After 2001 it turned to a webzine, but in August of 2017 the 4th printed issue has finally seen the light of the day. The reactions to it were just positive so far. You can expect the fifth printed issue to be released soon, so watch out!

I know you organized some concerts in your hometown Uzhgorod/Ungvár such as Napalm Death (in 2009), the open-air festival UzhGoreRot, and also Total Cover Party, among others. Can you tell us how the Napalm Death concert actually happened? Will there be any upcoming editions of those festivals? Or any upcoming concerts in general?

- The Napalm Death show happened due to Obscure Promotion from the Czech Republic. They’ve contacted me regarding a possible show in Uzhgorod and I’ve agreed right away to make it happen for our small city! Until last year I was managing to organize all the mentioned events and series of the Death Metal Assault concerts, but as my health got worse I decided to stop all my activities until I fix it. So no festival or concert plans at all actually.

One cannot overlook the situation in Eastern Ukraine. How did that affect the metal activity in your region?

- Our region is still quite poor, even if we are the closest of the cities to the European Union and the prices are much like in the EU, the wages over here just horrible, hard to make for living. Most of the citizens just surviving or go abroad to work and get better conditions for living there. It limits the possibilities for any normal behaved metal activities as well, just in terms of organizing a show, you mostly bump into minuses rather than pluses. So you can’t make it forever. The same goes for the local bands, they simply can’t survive and fade out quickly.

  Castrum's current line-up. L-R: Cornelius(guitar/vocals), Eugene(drums), Viktor(bass). 2014

You also mixed/produced several albums of some local bands and Domhring's "Vicar of Satan" (Hungarian black metal band fronted by our mutual friend Georgius - ed). Can you tell us about this activity? Are you still doing it? If so, any releases we shall hear for ourselves?

- Oh, I did plenty of such work in the past. Mainly for local bands, as you noticed. Besides the Domhring material I also mixed demos & albums for Vulvulator, Rise of Cadia, The Symbioz, GAZ-66 Intrusion, etc. Now I stopped doing this, but still fond of the whole procedure. So sometime maybe I will return to this hobby again.

You also re-designed Archangel's Lantern logo (our mutual friend Georgius' webzine). Have you done any art that was used by other bands or that is simply available somewhere else?

- I was mostly doing poster designs in the past for my events and for others too. I always liked the graphical way of manipulation, learned a few tricks, but nothing special. I designed the old Castrum logo, by the way.

What are your hobbies?

- We already touched most of them above. My hobbies connected with music, but when not, I like to swim, play football or table tennis, walk the nature.

What albums do you deem as influential (those who changed your vision towards metal and music in general)?

- Oh, there’s really plenty of them. But if focus to a few, then I would definitely mention albums with Destruction, Death, Dissection, Hypocrisy, Sodom, Kreator, Morbid Angel, Dismember, Vader, Grave, Kataklysm, that list is just endless, ha-ha… Too many good and influential albums to mention, you know.

And about your local cuisine: what foods and drinks can you recommend us?

- Well, the Transcarpathian cuisine is strongly influenced by the Hungarian, which I adore very much. I really like “gulyásleves”, which is a Hungarian soup, made of beef, vegetables, ground paprika and other spices. Also “lecsó”, it is also a Hungarian thick vegetable stew. But my top favorite is “Bécsi szelet” that is “Wiener schnitzel” as in Austrian, is a type of schnitzel made of a thin, breaded, pan-fried veal cutlet. As for the drinks, even if I do not drink alcohol at all, I would definitely recommend some sorts of local wine and our local specialty, which is cognac.

Our interview is drawing to an end. Please tell us your future plans, and some words for the readers!

- Well, thank you so much Sorin for this in-depth interview and opportunity to be included at the webzine of Sadistik Witchfukk. Really great combination of questions, liked to answer them from the start till the end. Plan number one is to get fixed my health asap. Then to finally record my vocal parts for the 4th album of Castrum. Afterwards, I will be definitely interested to have some journeys in the form of tours. I hope the readers enjoyed our conversation and found out something to check out or simply listen to. Keep supporting your local scene, listen to the music you love, buy records, visit shows and have fun!

Eugene Ryabchenko

Interview with Eugene Ryabchenko

Hail my friend, Eugene! You are very welcome to my metal blog, Archangel’s Lantern! First of all tell us, how and when you started to enjoy metal music and scene. Which one(s) was/were your first musical stuff?

- Hello Gyuri. Thanks for having me on your blog!I started playing drums in 2006, the same year I started visiting local metal shows. I was always fascinated by watching and listening to metal drummers. The first really heavy band for me was Sepultura/Soulfly who were introduced to me by my older brother Peter.

When did you start play the drums? What was/were your first bands? Which musicians/bands influenced you in the beginning? What are your favourite drummers nowadays? Beside the drums you play the other instruments?

- The first serious band I had was the local hardcore/metal punk band The Symbioz. I joined them in 2007 and were having gigs on a regular basis. I was influenced a lot by Joey Jordison from Slipknot in my first year. Later I was introduced to Death metal drummers like Derek Roddy (who was my first Death metal inspiration), George Kollias, Kerim "Krimh" Lechner, Tim Yeung. All the aformentioned drummers are still my favorite in the metal scene. I am also a big Ian Paice, Travis Barker, Eloy Casagrande, Ray Luzier, James Stewart fan. Beside drums I play flute and a bit of guitar. I did 7 years of music school playing piano.

You are on tour with Vital Remains currently. Tell the readers your experiences.
(by the way, how was the tour in Central/South-America?)

- Sorry, I don't have the permission to talk about Vital Remains in interviews for I am a session drummer only.

Almost a month ago you played with Angerseed in Czech Rebuplic/Slovakia (AGRESSIVE MUSIC FEST & GOTHOOM FEST). Any memorable stories?

- I love the Angerseed. It is always a big pleasure to hang out with them. We have a lot of fun. The fests are nice, but most of the time they are really stressful 'cause the lack of time. During that weekend we had almost zero hours of sleep which is really exhausting.

You are playing with a lot of bands, as a session/live musician and as a member as well. (in different styles, like Death metal, black metal, grindcore from different countries: Castrum, Polish Banisher, Locracy and Waldschrat (both Austria), Afgrund (Italy/Austria) and maybe there are some ones which I don’t know yet. Enlighten us please briefly your activity in these hordes.

- Yeah, I do. It's not easy to play with so many bands abroad. But we all rehearse at home to a metronome/videos and then just meet before gigs and we're ready to go. Remote bands usually work like this. But since we all have some experience already it is not impossible to pull it off.
This year I did some gigs with Posthumous Blasphemer (BY), Banisher (PL), Angerseed (HU), Waldschrat (AT). Last year I had shows with Void of Madness (AT), Obliterate (SK).
Who knows what will the future bring. I really enjoyed the time spent with all these guys.
We don't play shows with Afgrund currently since we need to work on new material at the moment.

It’s always a great feeling for me to play live covers + a few old stuff with you, Cornelius and Victor of Castrum. What are your favourite tracks from Castrum’s discography? (from 3 LP-s and perhaps from old demos, I’m just  very curious, you know :) )

- I always enjoy your company on stage Gyuri! Wish we could play together more often. Feeling already nostalgic when I recall the cover parties we did in Uzhgorod.
I dig most of the new album from Castrum (unreleased) as well as some of the older stuff I really enjoy to play. In particular "The Gate of the Universal Mystery", "Brand", "Source of Hate".
I wanted to take a second and mention Corey and Victor to tell how much grateful I am for the time I could spend with them over the years. Especially Corey, who introduced me to Death metal in the first place and was my mentor. The guys became my second family and I grew up with them. Most of what I have achieved these days and what I've become I can thank to them.

(Castrum line-up:Victor, Cornelius and Eugene, 2014)

Do you have any special hobbies besides playing the drums/music? What are your favorite albums, books and movies?

- Lately I am very busy with music. Most of my free time I spend editing my silly videos. Sometimes when I am not lazy I do some sports like jogging, swimming or go to the gym. The last good book I read was "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, unfortunately that was a while ago. I am a big Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Lord of The Rings franchise fan and also like retro and old movies from the 70-80-90-s.

(XXth Anniversary show of Castrum, 27.IX.2014, Castrum Ungh/Uzhhorod/Ungvár)

You are living in Wien nowadays. Which museums, art-galleries, foods and drinks do you recommend to us from that area? What landscapes are you prefer in Austria?

- Vienna is beautiful. Can't say I am a huge appreciator of art, but I visited most of the biggest museums in Vienna multiple times. My favorite one is the Naturhistorische Museum. If you look for Viennese speciality make sure to check out Figlmuller for a schnitzel, or just grab a sausage from a stand on the street. The fancy cafeterias like Mozart, Central or Griensteidl offer nice apfelstrudels.
Vienna is probably one of the few places in Austria that is located on a flat land. I recently visited Hallstatt and the surrounding areas of Salzburg for a short but lovely vacation in the mountains. The whole experience was breathtaking!
As well as constant rain, hahaha...

Share some thoughts about our beautiful homeland...

- I try to travel as much as I can to see the whole world and convince myself that there isn't a better place than home.

What are your future plans for this year?

- For the remaining year I have a couple of gigs left here and there. My schedule is still not final for 2017. So I can't really say I have huge plans for Autumn-Winter.

(Eugene and Tobias "Tobben" Gustafsson, Summer Breeze, 18th of August, 2017)

Köszönöm szépen/Danke Sehr/Thanks so much mein freund, it was a pleasure. Wish you all the best with all of your bands and in your personal life as well! Send a message to the readers of Archangel’s Lantern in the end.

- Thanks for the opportunity to be featured in your zine and hope to see more of your work online in the future!
