Morgon (15.XII.2009)

 Interview with Morgon (15.XII.2009)

(Questions compiled by Kate Szíjártó (1987-2010 R.I.P.)

and Georgius)

Ave! Please, tell me something about the beginning, what does MORGON stand for and how did the name come to your mind?

Haglaz: Ave Georgius! MORGON started as a two man project in the winter months of 2007. Me and Nordah were influenced by Black/Death Metal bands like DISSECTION, GATES OF IHSTAR and so on... We started to create songs already, but we needed a drummer & bassist to complete the whole thing and in 2008 everything turns fine as Grym (drums) and Urisaz (bass) joined the band. MORGON is a fictional name, but it stands for a black burning flame that everyone of MORGON bears inside.

In your letters you wrote that your debut album "Infinitas" will be released in January, 2010. Tell me please about your work on it and is there any concept behind "Infinitas"?

H: We started to write the material for "Infinitas" in the middle of 2009. It will contain 6 songs of blackened death metal and an acoustic track. There isn't a real concept for "Infinitas", but the songs are connected in another way, basically the songs are about the eternal realm of death, the gates of eternity. We hope to release it at the beginning of 2010 when nothing cross its way...

Germany is famous for great Death/Thrash/Black metal bands. You are from Sachsen-Anhalt. Could you please tell me about the local metal scene?

Grym: I think we have no real "metal scene" here, but there are some cool bands from this area like HIDDEN IN THE FOG (which unfortunately split-up), TRIMONIUM and INTO OBSCURITY. For sure there are also a couple of Pagan/Black Metal bands, but I personally find that none of them can convince.

H: We have a small "scene" around our bands from this region, but it's very underground. Bring back the 80ies!!!

I would like to know something about your live-shows, what bands did you play with and were there any exciting things during or after gigs?

H: We played just one show this year, but it was very special and a great audience. The feedback was very good and we'll go on in 2010! You can watch a video from this show at our MySpace site (myspace.com/morgon666). After the show we have some beer and talk to our fans...

Besides playing in MORGON what do you do, what are you interested in?

G: I am a moviemaniac, I collect and watch many movies. But I also like to draw some artworks or wander through the woods.

H: I also play in a Melodic Death Metal band called INTO OBSCURITY and some other music projects.

What are your 5 favourite albums?

G: DISSECTION – "Storm Of The Light's Bane", EMPEROR – "Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk", BATHORY – "Under The Sign Of The Black Mark", GATES OF ISHTAR – "The Dawn Of Flames", MAYHEM – "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas".

H: DISSECTION – "The Somberlain", MEMBARIS – "Into Nevermore", HIDDEN IN THE FOG – "Damokles", BATHORY – "Bathory", UNANIMATED – "Ancient God of Evil".

What Ukrainian and Hungarian metal bands you know?

G: Beside CASTRUM and DOMHRING, we also know Attila Csihar's band TORMENTOR; great typical old school Black metal.

H: Fuck yeah! TORMENTOR! Unholy Metal from Hungary... love it.

I'm very sorry that in 2006 Jon Nödtveidt committed suicide, however, I respect his decision. What is your opinion about Jon as a person and musician?

G: I did not meet Jon personally or saw DISSECTION live, but for me he was one of the most important musicians for the whole Death/Black Metal scene. I read much about him and his death, and I think his "work" was done. He personally accented that "everything was said" with DISSECTION as his speaking tube. His achievement is immortal.

H: Jon was definitely a genius musician! His music was full of atmosphere and dark spirit... just a few people have a level to create music like him. I saw DISSECTION live in 2005 and it was a great pleasure to see them live before he committed suicide. He has my deepest respect. Rest in Chaos Jon!

Personally, I found new GORGOROTH album one of the best releases of 2009, besides Tomas Asklund, formerly DISSECTION's drummer, took part in "Quantos Possunt Ad Satanitatem Trahunt". What do you think of the album itself?

G: Yeah, definitely one of the best releases in 2009. It is a good mix between aggression and melody, the riffs are catchy and the scornful voice of Pest is fucking great!

H: It seems that GORGOROTH is born again... in a positive way! Killer album and truly one of the best releases in 2009!

What are your plans for the future? I hope one day we'll play together!

G: We really hope so, that would be cool!

H: We rehearse new songs and prepare for the recording of "Infinitas" and, of course, we hope to play some shows in 2010! That would be great to play with your band and I hope it will happen soon...

Danke Sehr! As a conclusion, would you like to say something to the readers of Encomium?

H: Hail to all the Metalheads and check out our new CD! Keep the flame burning!

G: Stay Metal and Hail Chaos!

Morgon

Interview with Morgon (H, G and N)
Sadistik Witchfukk webzine
(21th of February, 2013)

Salve, Morgon! Enlighten the readers about the beginning of your horde and tell us about the Morgon name!

H: The Band was formed in the Winter Months of 2007 by me and Nordah. Our goal was to create very dark and intense music with the roots of occult Magick. It has begun as a two-man-project and became a full band in 2008 as Ghrym (Drums) and Urisaz (Bassguitar) joined the Abyss. We chose the Name ‘Morgon’ basically as a fictional name, but it also means ‘Dark Mountain’ in some French region. For us, Morgon is a symbol and a tool for representing the individual dark spirit (The Black Flame) and stands for the thought of illumination and liberation of the self.

I have your 2 materials (I'm very thankful for that), "Infinitas" and "Saint of Death". Your first release is as an EP, second is as a demo, but for me 'Saint of Death' is an EP too. Relate us about recording process of these (lyrical concept as well).

H: Our latest release ‘Saint Of Death’ was recorded by myself in our rehearsal place/Necrosophic Studios after the summer solstice of 2011 in a very ambiental and creative mood. So we all had the time that we needed to record the new material. You can call it Demo/EP or whatever, but because of the playing time we decided to call it a demo with 5 tracks. It is a concept record dedicated to Master Qayin, the Lord of Death. The music and lyrics it represents are all inspired by ritualistic words of the qayinitic lore.

(Saint of Death demo +Morgon-pin)

I heard Morgon rehearsal materials firstly on myspace in Summer 2009 and I was surprised about  your raw and powerful energy. Recount us about your inspiration or inspirations, please!

G.: As religious individuals, we draw inspiration from our personal studies and experiences on  our path - the path on the left (LHP). We dedicate ourselves to the infinite, dark and clear essence of Chaos (the primeval source, the origin and the end of all) and the related deities with the final aim of liberation.

I know you are from Sachen-Anhalt region.  Introduce us in your local scene.

H: In the 90's there was a small group of metalheads here, but nowadays they all disappeared in some bigger cities or just listen to fuckin` metalcore, you know… If you like, check my other band ‘Into Obscurity’ http://www.into-obscurity.de/, kind of Melodic Death Metal from the old days.

G.: I don´t think there is any kind of “scene”; it´s only a small region. The only two nameable bands are "Into Obscurity" and "Trimonium".

I still believe that our common inspiration, Jon Andreas Nödtveidt (R.I.C.) connected me with you in 2009. Your thoughts about Him...

H: Strength, will, fearless and now one with Chaos, a Fireborn-Satanist. Still a great inspiration for me as a person and musically of course.

G.: Jon was definitely a very interesting, strong person. But I wouldn´t describe him as an inspiration. Everyone has to cut and explore his own way on the path he had chosen. Nevertheless he was a great visionary, a talented musician and a kindred spirit.

How was the situation with your live performances last year?

G.: Beside some "usual" club gigs we had the great honour to perform a live ritual with The Devil´s Blood in Leipzig last year. This was an interesting experience and the most nameable event.

N.: For me it is always satisfying to perform live. During a live ritual it sometimes seems that people can feel a kind of "inner disturbance" which they can´t escape of. It´s a great feeling to see the flames rising in their eyes.

Which covers did you played in your past in live-show and which will you plan?

H: We played a cover from Bathory ‘Raise The Dead’ and Tormentor ‘Elizabeth..’ which perfectly fits in our set. I think we`ll always play one or more covers at the shows, you`ll see.

You are working now with recordings for the forthcoming Morgon stuff, your debut LP. How many tracks do you want to record and when it will be published? What are your plans after the recordings?

H: At the moment we`re recording our debut LP which contains 11 tracks and will be released in Summer. After the recordings we will do some promotional stuff, hopefully with a label as support.

What are your favourite 5 LP's, movies and all-time favourite books?

G: I can´t name „all time favourites“ because it changes constantly. It also depends on the occasion. At the moment I´m fascinated about "Þurseitr", a ritualistic dark ambient project by a friend of mine from Scotland. I use it for my seta´s (a kind of meditation).

N: Favourite movies of all time? Difficult to say, because I´m not a great movie fan. But I like the work of Anthony Hopkins as actor and composer, for example in the masterpiece "The Waltz Goes On".

Germany is not only famous as a great historical, cultural heritage... You have more and more great bands, in past and now too... What are your favourite German bands or musicians from your excellent scene? What do you think about the band Erazor?

G.: Sodom, Thulcandra and Nawaharjan, the band of a spiritual brother. I don´t know Erazor.

H: Poison, Abigor, Hidden in the Fog.

What is your opinion about the last Gorgoroth releases, as "Quantos Possunt", "Satanitatem Trahunt", and a new one, re-release album, "Under a Sign of Hell"? More metalheads said that the re-released "Under the Sign of Hell" is too clear. For me it is ok, because I like all the drum parts of Tomas Asklund in all His bands.

H: The old, raw, crushing Gorgoroth sound is gone but ‘Quantos Possunt…’ is a good "rebirth" album.

G.: I like the new records, I don´t think that the clear sound is a disadvantage.
Additionally, Tomas Asklund´s drum parts are always impressive, very strong and precise.

I hope I'll visit your great country in the near future, because I've never been in Deutschland and I want to see your mystic landscapes, for example Harz. Are you inspired by your nature?

G.: Yes, it can be said that the Harz is also an influence for us because it is a dark, magical place where many legends were created. The Brocken (Blocksberg) mountain is famous for the traditional "Walpurgisnacht" (Walpurgisnight), which is known as the “feast of the witches”. It is my favourite place for magical workings and we´re often going there.

What do you recommend us, the readers, to eat and drink in Germany? (local foods and drinks)

H: The German famous beer of course and Absinth from our local distillery and maybe some Roulades to eat...

Danke sehr, Morgon! We hope to see you at your live shows soon! Your message to the readers...

N: Maybe there is an opportunity to play in your country as a part of a small tour with a local band next year. Thanks for the interest and stay tuned for further news.

German Death/Black metal horde was formed in 2007 by H. (guitar/vocals) and N. (guitar/backing vocals). G. (drums) and U. (bass) joined them in 2008. It was 5 years ago, when I listened to Morgon for the first time on Myspace and noticed their talent immediately. After the demo ”Formless Divine” (2009) the guys released an excellent EP, ”Infinitas” in 2010 and an awesome demo, ”Saint Of Death” in 2011 (in my humble opinion ”Saint Of Death” more than demo because the sound’s quality is simply brilliant). Morgon recorded their first full-length album, ”Black Light Of Liberation” last year and it contains 9 Songs of dedicated Occult Art. Obscure journey by German quartette starts with a ritualistic track, called ”Unveil The Gates Of Choronzon” splendidly introduced the whole atmosphere of ”Black Light Of Liberation”. Morgon-guys created a very diversified album, they masterfully mixed massive, brutal parts with occult harmonies and the sound’s quality is perfect just like musical ability of German band.

My favourite songs: ”Luciferian Trident”, “The Awakening Of The Firebeast” and ”Goddess Of The Blackmoon”.

I would recommend this unique album to all the fanatics of Dissection and Unanimated and I hope I’ll see Morgon live on the stages soon.

Morgon: "Black Light Of Liberation" is planned to be released during March/April via Obscure Abhorrence Productions.

Hrím

Interview with Hrím
(Sons of Fenris, Nawaharjan, ex-Morgon)

Hail my good old friend, Hrím, Hellcome to Archangel’s Lantern! How and when did you get introduced to metal music? What were your very first cassettes/LP-s/CD-s?

- I guess I was "introduced" to metal in the age of 12 through a friend of my father. He often brought me some sampler CD´s of various German metal magazines when he visited us. Also I got my first hard rock album from him, it was "Killers" of Kiss. A little bit later I received Iron Maiden´s "Best Of The Beast" on CD and AC/DC´s "The Razors Edge" on tape from my father.

When did you start to play the drums? Which drummers influenced you in the beginning and please name us 5 of your favourite ones! Do you play other musical instruments beside the drums?

-  It was was around 2000/2001 when I got my first drum set. I played just in some small, unserious rock/metal projects during my school time until I joined  Morgon in 2008. As teenager I have often listened to Godsmack and Tool, I really liked their drummers, Tommy Stewart and Danny Carey. Also both bands have fascinated me because of their subtle mysticism and varied musical skills. Other drummers I like and who were for sure an inspiration are Chris Witchhunter, Tomas Asklund and Oskar Karlsson. Beside the drums I occupy myself with traditional instruments and I also started to play bass guitar.

As Hrím, you are playing in a Dark Heathen horde, called Sons Of Fenris. Enlighten the readers, please all the important information  of this dark alliance.

- Werewolf (the "head" behind Sons of Fenris) is one of my closest friends. At the end of last year he asked me if I would like to play drums in Sons of Fenris and become a constant member, and so I agreed immediately. I decided to leave Morgon because of lasting divergent opinions with the bandmates on a personal level and to focus myself on Sons of Fenris and my new band, Nawaharjan. It is great to be part of these deeply religious bands because they completely consist of spiritually-focused individuals, which is very important for me personally.
Sons of Fenris is dedicated to the dark Germanic deities and the primordial anti-cosmic forces. It is Their tongue, manifested in black art - a poisonous tongue that preaches devastation among the human race and plants the seeds of desperation and misery in their hearts and minds. It is a loud tremor that affects the cosmic structures, like the roaring of the great wolf Fenrir.

What we should know about your future plans with Sons of Fenris? (new material, live performances)

- At the moment we are planning the release of the first full-length album. After this we will prepare ourselves for possible live appearances, but there is nothing concrete yet so far.

Would you be so kind to talk about the relation between old tradition and your religious point of view? What is your source of Inspiration?

- I believe that tradition is something unique and pre-destined by fate - the Wyrd - and a cultural heritage of the ancestors.  For me personally the religious point of view goes hand in hand with the tradition which I occupy myself with and which defines my spiritual path. I think the religious perspective is the natural conclusion of a tradition you are working with. It is linked with the individual perception of the world and even the whole cosmic creation and the cosmic structures.
This, what most humans perceive and understand as reality in general, so - the structure of this world - is a constructed lie made by the demiurge in order to fence the human cattle and preventing them from realizing their hidden potential. The gods of the cosmic order, the Aesir, aren´t interested in encouraging the humans to rise, instead they want abulic slaves who worship them. It is up to the individual itself to seek for liberation through knowledge and development and finally to transcend the cosmic lie. The acting and working of the dark Germanic deities (especially Loki as active trigger) against the cosmic forces in order to expose and destroy the illusions which the Aesir have created in their arrogance is honourable and a paragon for the fight for liberation.
The term "Dark Germanic Heathenism" (which was originally created and used by Orm of the Swedish band Ormgård to characterize a tradition opposed to the pro-cosmic oriented heathenism) is probably the most suitable description and expression for the tradition I follow and which I am working with.
My "source of inspiration" is my inner burning spirit. It is my engine that pushes me forward to develop and to improve myself. It is the illuminating flame on my path.

Share with the readers please an interesting legend of your mystical and beautiful mountain range, the Harz.

- The Harz is a very powerful, dark and magical landscape. There are many legends and sagas around the region, some of the most famous ones are for sure the legends of the Roßtrappe and the Teufelsmauer (literally translated as "devil´s wall"). Also the Walpurgis Night (the feast of the witches) is traditionally celebrated at the Brocken mountain (Blocksberg) on April the 30th. But what the most people don´t know is that it is told that the forests of the Harz were the home of giants, "Hünen" in colloquial speech , and other malicious beings. For this reason the Germanic tribes avoided to advance further into the deep forests for a long time. There is the legend of the Sargberg (“coffin mountain”) for example, which says that the rocks of the mountain cover the burned ash of a fallen giant king who conquered the Harz with his army of giants who has spread fear and terror among the humans. The large amount of such “sagas” (better said reports) about dark creatures is an evidence of the great and unique magical essence in this area. The world we know is made out of the first giant, Aurgelmir:
Vafþrúðnismál 21:

"Ór Ymis holdi
var jörð of sköpuð,
en ór beinum björg,
himinn ór hausi
ins hrímkalda jötuns,
en ór sveita sær."

"From Ymir's flesh

the earth was made,
and from his bones hills,
the sky from his skull,
of the ice-cold giant,
and from his sweat/blood the sea."

In the Harz, especially at the Brocken mountain, you can clearly perceive his primordial essence. This makes the area to a perfect place for (úti-)seta (a form of [outside] meditation ) and magical workings related to the dark primordial forces.

Tell us briefly about the Saxons and Thuringians of migration period and their traditions. Do you recommend us some interesting books/documentary movies of these German tribes?

- Saxons and Thuringians were proud and fearless warriors who fought stubbornly  for their freedom. Glory and honour were the most highest values beside of their deeply religious devotion. The Saxons gained their name from their distinctive weapon, the seax dagger (Old Frisian “sax”, Old Saxon “saks”). Also they have worshipped the (war) god Seaxnēat (Saxnot, who could be equated with Tyr/Teiwaz). The Thuringians were named “Toringi” by Tacitus, and later interpreted as “sons of Thor”,  which seems to be an untenable hypothesis because the god Thor was called “Thunar” in their language. Feasts and sacrifices for the gods were an integral part of their religion and tradition as well as annual gatherings (called “Thing”) with other groups and tribes. The confederation of warriors who have joined up under the leadership of a chief or chosen warrior was the highest and most honourable social fabric.
I could recommend some general books about the topic here, but all of them are written in German language. Same goes for the documentaries.

Which places/museums are your recommendations in Saxony-Anhalt?

- There are two really interesting museums in relation to the ancient times, the museum for pre-history in Halle (Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte) and the unique open air museum in Zethlingen. This “museum” is a small  reconstructed village of the Germanic tribe of the Langobards (Lombards), which have settled in the north of Saxony-Anhalt.

Do you have any special hobbies beside the music?

- I like to be outside in the forest, be it for meditation or to go hiking and fishing. I am generally interested in bushcraft, outdoor and survival stuff. Beside my “regular daily” hobbies such as reading and doing sports, I'm also interested in ancient weapons and martial arts.

Which newcomer bands would you recommend to the readers?
- I wouldn’t say that they are newcomers, but they are getting for sure more and more attention at the moment than before – Mgła and Svartidauði, really powerful and very hypnotic bands. Another refreshing band with an interesting concept are The Committee. I saw them recently and their performance was pretty good.

Danke sehr, mein freund, Hrím! Send your message please to the readers of Archangels Lantern in the end of this conversation.

- Explore and honour your cultural heritage. Recognize your true self but kill your ego. Deny the consume-oriented materialism – in the end everything will burn. Back into the primordial abyss – Hailaz Abgrundjam!
