Art of Johan Ejerblom (IMPLODE)

Art of Johan Ejerblom (IMPLODE)

"So I just had my first exhibition, and I had though that it would be the same as walking onto the stage; the nervousness would go away as soon as I open the doors and let people in. But this was completely different, there was no filter between me and the crowd. I had to discuss with people about my art, had to explain why they left my head as a thought and come together as a painting on the papers.
But at the same time it was the most liberation thing. To see people, both friends and strangers look at what you have created and discussing about what they see in the colors and ink lines.
That feeling beats almost all other feelings.
I painted a lot when I was young, filled books with knights, monsters and swords and armors, we never played Dungeons & Dragons, we made our own games. But then job and adulthood came and I stopped painting for some reason. It wasn't until 2-3 years ago the lust for pencils came back.
Now it's part of everyday life."
- Johan Ejerblom -

 ”Eye See Them To”, 52x72cm

I wanted to make a drawing that would change depending on how far from the painting you stood. To make details pop as you came closer. As most of my painting, I use water color and ink.

”Man of Many Men”, 45x45cm

The same idea as ”Eye See Them To” but a bit darker. I wanted the creatures to bend, twist and lock into each other. This took a lot of time to finish, about 40-50 hours.

”Self Redemptive”, 27x37cm

A self portrait that isn't as morbid as it looks. At least it wasn't my purpose when i drew it. Sometimes you just feel that you got so much inspiration and motivation that it feels like your head is going to explode.

”Two Armies”, 52x72cm

One of my first painting. Two armies lines up towards each other and one soldier daring to take a step towards something unknown.

”Compression Release”, 56x53cm

Another portrait, here I wanted to test a new technique, adding layers of colors to make the smoke, or flames. This one I like really much myself.

Cover for Implode - ”The Anti Cimex EP”

A cover for our coming EP, my first digital try. I bought a Wacom board and absolutely loved it. I will make more of these in the future.

”Freedom Order”

An idea I had, mostly to try a new technique where blew with a straw to make the splash effect.

”All Against Space”, 52x72cm

Another new technique I had to try, using masking fluid. You paint with this fluid, paint with water color and then scrub the dried fluid. Everything underneath will stay white.

Art of Jonas Lindblood (Puteraeon)

Drawings of Jonas Lindblood (Puteraeon)

"I started drawing at an early age and drew all kinds of devil-like stuff through school my teacher once said i only drew pentagrams and inverted crosses, and i guess there where a lot of them too. I got the highest grade in drawing back in school. But i kind of lost it. Stopped doing pictures somewhere in my late teens, when i worked more and more on music and Taetre back in those days. I have always loved the ink style black/white. I found a inkpen 0.5 by coincident back in 2014. That led me to start doing some small stuff, which led me to surf YouTube for different tutorials. I think that has given me very much and i think it's easy to see that i have progressed a lot during these last few years of doing it."  - Jonas Lindblood

This is a cabin in the mountains. I wanted to do something that wasn't so horror-inspired like most my stuff is. Like all the rest i have used only black pens. Mainly using 0.8 pen in the foreground and details in 0.1-0.3.

Mainly a skull and a rose. The rose was a big challenge for me. Not really 100% happy with the skull either but i guess it's ok. I also wanted a different angle on the skull than I usually do.

This one started out like it mostly always does i start doing the head and then it all evolves, wasn't really sure what would become of it in the beginning, but in the end I'm happy with the results.

This is one of my Game of Thrones pics i made. This one is the Night's King. I am pleased with the end results on this one. I guess i did it within 2 days, drawing now and then. I always get a bit scared to fuck up everything since i use ink and paper and there is no way back if you do something wrong. But this one turned out good.

This is a pretty new one. It kinda just happened. I think I was practicing doing proportions on the guy and it developed into that cultish guy with fire and snakes.

This picture came out of the idea of framing a picture in a different frame more or less and i think it turned out pretty ok. Zombie guy in front of a graveyard with some smoke and trees.

This was the first pic I did in 2014 after a very long break in sketching. Some people think it is inspired by Pungent Stench's album "Been caught buttering" but that was never my intention. I just wanted some kind of disturbed love. Love of tentacles hehehe J

A pretty recent skull I did. I had a photo of a skull that i tried to redo, and I think it turned out really good. In my eyes this is one of my best drawings.

Another skull, this one more devil-like. I think this one is pretty cool as well. Very Death metal, a bit in the vein of Entombed's "Crawl" motive I wear onstage.

This one is a bit "The walking dead" inspired. A guy being eaten alive by zombies.

This one turned out pretty good as well I think. It's the chatterer from the movie "Hellraiser". Clive Barker has been a inspiration for very long and the novel "The Hellbound" heart which the movie is based on is awesome. My absolute Clive Barker favorite is probably "The great and secret show" which has inspired me in writing both songs for Taetre and Puteraeon.

Don't really know what this is. It's not a flower but it has some flower-qualities. I like it though.

Johan Jansson

Interview with Johan Jansson
(Interment, Moondark, Dellamorte, Parasit)

Hail Johan, welcome to my little blog, Archangel's Lantern! How and when did you get introduced to underground metal music? What was your very first stuff (cassettes/vinyl)? Which band did you see live for the first time?

- Hey and thanks for inviting me to make an interview with Archangel’s Lantern! Well, I don’t remember but it was maybe in the late 70’s the first time. I had a friend that had KISS on cassettes that was the beginning I think. Then in the early 80’s my cousin listened a lot to early UK punk like, Sex Pistols, Sham 69, Angelic Upstarts, Clash etc. He also listened to early Motörhead, Metallica, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Black Sabbath etc. and since then it’s just rolled on… I think my very first vinyl was the KISS – Rock And Roll Over album from 1976. My first Metal live experience was actually Europe 1986 on their “Final Countdown” tour. Same year I also was on “Monsters of Rock” in Stockholm with Scorpions, Def Leppard, Ozzy Osbourne. In September I saw the last show with Cliff Burton (RIP) on Metallica’s Master of Puppets tour.

When did you start to play the guitars/bass and the drums? Which guitarists and drummers influenced you in the beginning?

- I started to play guitar in the mid 80’s with my first crappy guitar I got from my uncle. I started to play drums after a while when I got the chance to play on real drums. I think John Norum (Europe) was my first idol/influence as a guitarist. Later on it changed to Gary Holt, Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King. Drummers that were great at that time were Dave Lombardo, Charlie Benante, Gene Hogland etc.

Interment is a pretty old horde since 1988. How was the Swedish Death metal scene, in your opinion, back in the day? How do you hit it off with the Swedish underground nowadays? Would you be so kind as to recommend a few small underground hordes from Sverige?

- It was special to grow up when the Swedish Death Metal scene started. That’s why we and hundred other bands began when Entombed, Dismember, Grave and Unleashed released their first demo tapes. We were on Death Metal shows almost every weekend everywhere, bought and trading demos, merch and drinking beers. It’s of course not the same feeling nowadays but I think it have come back more and more. Many young awesome bands are growing up in the scene and keep the true Death Metal spirit alive!
Oh, they are many, but check out: Temisto, Bastard Grave, Gorgosaur, Engrave, Gorgonaut, Lik, Bastard Priest, Miasmal, Tormented etc…

Interment's official video called "Praise the Death" from 2014 is an excellent job and my favorite one from that year. Share some thoughts please about the circumstances of that material.

- Oh, thank you so much! The video was made by a friend of us, Susan Wicher, which is a photographer. She made that video with only a lot of live photos and some graveyard photos. Turned out really cool I think! The song is from the recording we did with Peter Bjärgö in March 2013. We recorded five songs that were released on three different split EP’s with Brutally Deceased, Tormented and Anatomia. Recently all five songs were released on cassette by Bifrost Records called “Among the Dead”.

Interment "Into the Crypts of Blasphemy” has been released on limited tapes this year via Valour music. Tell us please all the important information about this.

- Well, it’s nothing special about it except that it’s cool to release everything on cassette. He will also release the new album “Scent of the Buried” soon. Other guy will release the demography “Where Death Will Increase 1991-1994” on cassette as well soon. Only vinyl and cassette is real…

Interment completed "Gods of the Underground Tour 2015" with Australian thrashers Hobbs Angel Of Death last month. What are your experiences from that tour? You will start to desecrate with a new one, from February next year, called "PESTILENTIAL WINDS OVER EUROPE" TOUR 2016 together with Funebrarum and Putrisect ( both hordes from United States ), might it be possible to see your band, live, in Hungary or Slovakia ( maybe Ukraine ) later in 2016?

- The tour with Hobbs Angel Of Death was a great tour. Killer shows and great support! Peter Hobbs is a legend that I’m glad to finally have got to know and played with. He’s Metal to the bone and is supporting the underground scene to 100%. Hopefully our ways will be crossed once again in the near future!
I’m afraid to say that we don’t will play in Hungary, Slovakia or Ukraine this time. Because this tour is too short, only 8 gigs, it would have be too long distances to come over in the east Europe. But I really hope that we can do a tour only in the east Europe very soon! Want to play in Romania, Hungary, Czech, Slovakia, Bulgaria and all the other great countries down there! Next time!

What are the future plans of Interment besides the live performances? What is the situation with your other bands, as Dellamorte, Moondark, etc. nowadays?

- Well, I don’t know, except to play live as much as we can around the world we maybe can record some new stuff next year, we’ll see what happens. Moondark will record a new full length hopefully this spring. We signed with Cyclone Empire last year so we looking forward to finally release our first real album. My crustband Parasit will release the second album on Cyclone Empire soon. Dellamorte I don’t know, we’ll see when time is right we will do some new stuff and hopefully to play live as well.

I was lucky to meet you, live, with Entombed A.D. guys during the tour with Grave and Implode in Kosice/Slovakia in 2014. It was an excellent show, many thanks to all of you. Any memories from that one you would like to share with us? (I hope Ukrainian beer Lvivske tasted good to you after the show  :)
Thanks a lot! It was a great show I remember, Slovakia delivered! Well, I remember you and your friends because you were from Ukraine! And the beer tasted really good hehe…

Entombed A.D. in Colosseum Club, Kosice/Slovakia, 16.X.2014

(Victor (bass-player of Ukrainian Castrum), Johan Jansson and me in Kosice/Slovakia, 16.X.2014)

Johan and me, Kosice/Slovakia, 16.X.2014

I know, it's a very hard question but I would like to ask what is your favorite Centinex and Demonical album/track from those times, when you were the Vocalist there?

- Well, with Centinex I like the “Hellbrigade” and the last “World Declension” album most. Favorite tracks “Bloodhunt”, “Towards Devastation” and “Wretched Cut” to mention three of them. My favorite Demonical album is “Death Infernal” and my favorite tracks are many but “Return in Flesh” and “Bow to the Monolith” are great.

Which foods, drinks, and tobaccos do you recommend to us from your area?

- Well, I don’t know, we eat typical Swedish food I think. I like meat with potato gratin and a nice mushroom sauce, spaghetti carbonara, homemade pizza etc… Mostly drink beers and a smoky single malt whisky like Laphroaigh, Ardbeg or a Caol Ila. About tobaccos I don’t know what to say, I smoke regular cigarettes…

Do you have any special hobbies besides music? What are your favorite albums, books, movies?

- Not really, I don’t have the time for anything else except of music and my son that are 3,5 years old. Favorite albums are too many to mention but I can recommend the debut album with Swedish Temisto and the upcoming debut album with Chthe’ilist from Canada, check them out! I don’t read books so much, I wish I could read more books but I don’t have the time. I try to watch new movies as much as I can but I also watch a lot of TV series. I highly recommend “Fargo”, “Narcos” and “True Detective” to mention a few. I’m also following Walking Dead of course…

Tack så mycket for the interview, Johan! Send us some thoughts from Interment.

- Thank you, you’re welcome! The new Interment album “Scent of the Buried” will be out on April 1st. Please check it out if you like old school Swedish Death Metal, you will like it! We would love to play in Ukraine! It would be awesome if someone can book us there! Keep yourself updated on our websites and always support the underground! Buy merch, records and come to shows! Only death is real…

Hrím

Interview with Hrím
(Sons of Fenris, Nawaharjan, ex-Morgon)

Hail my good old friend, Hrím, Hellcome to Archangel’s Lantern! How and when did you get introduced to metal music? What were your very first cassettes/LP-s/CD-s?

- I guess I was "introduced" to metal in the age of 12 through a friend of my father. He often brought me some sampler CD´s of various German metal magazines when he visited us. Also I got my first hard rock album from him, it was "Killers" of Kiss. A little bit later I received Iron Maiden´s "Best Of The Beast" on CD and AC/DC´s "The Razors Edge" on tape from my father.

When did you start to play the drums? Which drummers influenced you in the beginning and please name us 5 of your favourite ones! Do you play other musical instruments beside the drums?

-  It was was around 2000/2001 when I got my first drum set. I played just in some small, unserious rock/metal projects during my school time until I joined  Morgon in 2008. As teenager I have often listened to Godsmack and Tool, I really liked their drummers, Tommy Stewart and Danny Carey. Also both bands have fascinated me because of their subtle mysticism and varied musical skills. Other drummers I like and who were for sure an inspiration are Chris Witchhunter, Tomas Asklund and Oskar Karlsson. Beside the drums I occupy myself with traditional instruments and I also started to play bass guitar.

As Hrím, you are playing in a Dark Heathen horde, called Sons Of Fenris. Enlighten the readers, please all the important information  of this dark alliance.

- Werewolf (the "head" behind Sons of Fenris) is one of my closest friends. At the end of last year he asked me if I would like to play drums in Sons of Fenris and become a constant member, and so I agreed immediately. I decided to leave Morgon because of lasting divergent opinions with the bandmates on a personal level and to focus myself on Sons of Fenris and my new band, Nawaharjan. It is great to be part of these deeply religious bands because they completely consist of spiritually-focused individuals, which is very important for me personally.
Sons of Fenris is dedicated to the dark Germanic deities and the primordial anti-cosmic forces. It is Their tongue, manifested in black art - a poisonous tongue that preaches devastation among the human race and plants the seeds of desperation and misery in their hearts and minds. It is a loud tremor that affects the cosmic structures, like the roaring of the great wolf Fenrir.

What we should know about your future plans with Sons of Fenris? (new material, live performances)

- At the moment we are planning the release of the first full-length album. After this we will prepare ourselves for possible live appearances, but there is nothing concrete yet so far.

Would you be so kind to talk about the relation between old tradition and your religious point of view? What is your source of Inspiration?

- I believe that tradition is something unique and pre-destined by fate - the Wyrd - and a cultural heritage of the ancestors.  For me personally the religious point of view goes hand in hand with the tradition which I occupy myself with and which defines my spiritual path. I think the religious perspective is the natural conclusion of a tradition you are working with. It is linked with the individual perception of the world and even the whole cosmic creation and the cosmic structures.
This, what most humans perceive and understand as reality in general, so - the structure of this world - is a constructed lie made by the demiurge in order to fence the human cattle and preventing them from realizing their hidden potential. The gods of the cosmic order, the Aesir, aren´t interested in encouraging the humans to rise, instead they want abulic slaves who worship them. It is up to the individual itself to seek for liberation through knowledge and development and finally to transcend the cosmic lie. The acting and working of the dark Germanic deities (especially Loki as active trigger) against the cosmic forces in order to expose and destroy the illusions which the Aesir have created in their arrogance is honourable and a paragon for the fight for liberation.
The term "Dark Germanic Heathenism" (which was originally created and used by Orm of the Swedish band Ormgård to characterize a tradition opposed to the pro-cosmic oriented heathenism) is probably the most suitable description and expression for the tradition I follow and which I am working with.
My "source of inspiration" is my inner burning spirit. It is my engine that pushes me forward to develop and to improve myself. It is the illuminating flame on my path.

Share with the readers please an interesting legend of your mystical and beautiful mountain range, the Harz.

- The Harz is a very powerful, dark and magical landscape. There are many legends and sagas around the region, some of the most famous ones are for sure the legends of the Roßtrappe and the Teufelsmauer (literally translated as "devil´s wall"). Also the Walpurgis Night (the feast of the witches) is traditionally celebrated at the Brocken mountain (Blocksberg) on April the 30th. But what the most people don´t know is that it is told that the forests of the Harz were the home of giants, "Hünen" in colloquial speech , and other malicious beings. For this reason the Germanic tribes avoided to advance further into the deep forests for a long time. There is the legend of the Sargberg (“coffin mountain”) for example, which says that the rocks of the mountain cover the burned ash of a fallen giant king who conquered the Harz with his army of giants who has spread fear and terror among the humans. The large amount of such “sagas” (better said reports) about dark creatures is an evidence of the great and unique magical essence in this area. The world we know is made out of the first giant, Aurgelmir:
Vafþrúðnismál 21:

"Ór Ymis holdi
var jörð of sköpuð,
en ór beinum björg,
himinn ór hausi
ins hrímkalda jötuns,
en ór sveita sær."

"From Ymir's flesh

the earth was made,
and from his bones hills,
the sky from his skull,
of the ice-cold giant,
and from his sweat/blood the sea."

In the Harz, especially at the Brocken mountain, you can clearly perceive his primordial essence. This makes the area to a perfect place for (úti-)seta (a form of [outside] meditation ) and magical workings related to the dark primordial forces.

Tell us briefly about the Saxons and Thuringians of migration period and their traditions. Do you recommend us some interesting books/documentary movies of these German tribes?

- Saxons and Thuringians were proud and fearless warriors who fought stubbornly  for their freedom. Glory and honour were the most highest values beside of their deeply religious devotion. The Saxons gained their name from their distinctive weapon, the seax dagger (Old Frisian “sax”, Old Saxon “saks”). Also they have worshipped the (war) god Seaxnēat (Saxnot, who could be equated with Tyr/Teiwaz). The Thuringians were named “Toringi” by Tacitus, and later interpreted as “sons of Thor”,  which seems to be an untenable hypothesis because the god Thor was called “Thunar” in their language. Feasts and sacrifices for the gods were an integral part of their religion and tradition as well as annual gatherings (called “Thing”) with other groups and tribes. The confederation of warriors who have joined up under the leadership of a chief or chosen warrior was the highest and most honourable social fabric.
I could recommend some general books about the topic here, but all of them are written in German language. Same goes for the documentaries.

Which places/museums are your recommendations in Saxony-Anhalt?

- There are two really interesting museums in relation to the ancient times, the museum for pre-history in Halle (Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte) and the unique open air museum in Zethlingen. This “museum” is a small  reconstructed village of the Germanic tribe of the Langobards (Lombards), which have settled in the north of Saxony-Anhalt.

Do you have any special hobbies beside the music?

- I like to be outside in the forest, be it for meditation or to go hiking and fishing. I am generally interested in bushcraft, outdoor and survival stuff. Beside my “regular daily” hobbies such as reading and doing sports, I'm also interested in ancient weapons and martial arts.

Which newcomer bands would you recommend to the readers?
- I wouldn’t say that they are newcomers, but they are getting for sure more and more attention at the moment than before – Mgła and Svartidauði, really powerful and very hypnotic bands. Another refreshing band with an interesting concept are The Committee. I saw them recently and their performance was pretty good.

Danke sehr, mein freund, Hrím! Send your message please to the readers of Archangels Lantern in the end of this conversation.

- Explore and honour your cultural heritage. Recognize your true self but kill your ego. Deny the consume-oriented materialism – in the end everything will burn. Back into the primordial abyss – Hailaz Abgrundjam!

Gusthav

Interview with Gusthav
( Mysteriis, Futhark)

Hail Gusthav, welcome to Archangel’s Lantern! Tell us first of all, when did you become as a metal warrior and what was your very first band?

Gusthav: Thanks to Archangel´s Lantern for the interview, greetings to the readers.
I began listening metal in 1987, when I was in high school in that time I was listening some glam, hard rock and heavy metal bands,  later I was listening Black Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament Venom and Hellhammer, after that I knew more metal heads and they introduce me to more bands as Possessed, Bathory, Destruction, Death, Kreator, Sodom, among others...

If I’m not mistaken, you started with your black metal band, Mysteriis in 1995. Would you be so kind to share with the readers all the important details about this horde? (I’ve noticed, Mysteriis had a demo in 1997 and after then the band released a split with Futhark and an EP called ”Southern Storm” in 2013). Who write the music and lyrics? What we should know about lyrical conception?

Gusthav: That´s right, Mysteriis began in January of 1995 when Ivan and I left Apocriphal and decided to create a new band with a couple of songs of the previous band "The Wine of Immortality" and "Tale From Forest", we found a drummer and the band begin to create more songs for the recording of a demo, but a year later Ferath, the drummer must leave the country to live in USA.
In October of 1996 with a new drummer, Ihstath from the hordes Lemures and Drakar, Maleficiere Te Deum of Maleficarum playing bass guitar, Luna Roja in female voice, Ivan in the voices and Gusthav playing guitars and keyboards, we recorded our demo tape "Fullmoon Shadows", with 11 tracks, and a good review in some Latin American zines, but after the release of the demo Ivan left the band, and later the drummer Ihstath must leave due to their obligations with their main bands.
Mysteriis was on hold for 10 years waiting the perfect time to come back to the scene...
In 2007 with new members, Mysteriis begin to rehearse and give shows in our city and for the year of 2010, Ferath came back from USA and got the drummer place again.
In this 4 years some majors changes again in the line-up, we passed from a band of 5 members to a 2 members band, after our bass/vocals Sigurd left the band by work compromises.
I take the role of vocals and guitar and Ferath kept in  the drums.
In May of 2013 Depressive Illusions Records of Ukraine release the split CD-R "Tale From the Ancient Wisdom" with Futhark, another band where I play guitars, this split was produced in a limited edition of 33 copies and in August our demo tape was reissued by Ultrametal Productions - Iron Goat Commando, this time in CD format and 6 bonus tracks from rehearsals in 1995.
For December of 2013 we travel to Guayllabamba in Ecuador to play 1 show there and 1 show in a Colombian city in the border line with Ecuador called Ipiales, for this shows we release an EP in CD-R called "Southern Storm" with 2 intros and the songs "The Dark Grave" and "Tale from Forest" recorded in 2012.
Chivo Negro Productions from Ecuador, got license to the re-edition of our split with Futhark in a professional CD.
The 7th of December of 2014 Nebuloza Productions - Sabbath Productions release our full lenght "Crypt of Evil Sacrificial Rites" intro, interludio, outro and 8 tracks in the same vein of the ancient compositions but more technique and energy in the sound, 2 of them were present in our demo tape but now with better arrangements.

Give us more information about Pagan metal band, Futhark.

Gusthav: Futhark was the project I started with 2 friends in 2002, we wanted to do a kind of black metal mixing some pagan influences from Europe in a comparison with others from our land, we had some difficult at the beginning and some line-up changes, we have 1 demo tape, 2 promo CD-R’s and 2 splits one of them with Mysteriis and another with Invocacion, this was produced by my label Sabbath Productions in December 30 of 2013.

Enlighten us please about your activity in following hordes, as Nastrond, Grimm Winter, Vinterdød, Acromegalia, 666.

Gusthav: Acromegalia was a Death Metal band where I played bass guitar in 1994 with some partners from the high school, never recorded, just a few songs in a rehearsal session, this band had a short live.
Grim Winter and Vinterdød were side projects with some members of Futhark, but there´s nothing solid, just a few songs composed and soon the bands end.
The same for 666 a band we had with Río de Muerte From Oscuridad, Dark Moon From Erzebet, Azaigoth from Lemures and Alex from Mardraum, just 2 songs written and the band soon falls into oblivion...
Nastrond is a black metal band of 2 friends they're active since 2002 and invite me to play with them in 2008, the band has 3 demos and a compilation CD y had recorded 1 song with them "Nocturnal Fly" appearing in this compilation CD.

When did you start to play the guitars? Which guitarists and vocalists influenced you?

Gusthav: I begin playing guitars in 1993 when I buy my first guitar and play with Eternal a thrash death metal band with my brother and a partner of high school (Now they play a symphonic-gothic death metal).
Guitar players  that influence me many of them but I could mention right now Tom Warrior, Quorthon, Tonny Iommy,Sakis,  Vorphalack, vocals I must say again that Quorthon, Tom Warrior and Vorphalack and I must add Dead, Ventor, Mille Petroza and Grishnack.

What is the situation about your live performances in Medellin? Recommend us please some hordes from your local scene.

Gusthav: Actually we don´t performed live frequently, our last show in Medellín was in with Mara,  Futhark, Aorta and Beelzebul in June 29th of the last year, we´re planning some shows in other Colombian cities as Facatativa and Villavicencio in march and maybe in Medellín later.
There are a lot of recommended bands in Medellín, I could mention Masacre, Infernal, Beelzebul, Erzebet, Revenge, Witchtrap, Legacy, Esquizofrenia, Aorta, King, Death Kult, Sauthenerom, Morbid Macabre, Nightmare, Iron Command, Hellrider, Metal King, Futhark, Gomory and the list goes on...

Name us your 10 all-time favourite albums.
Gusthav: To name just only 10 albums its very difficult, but to answer your question I choose this ones in no particular order:
Slayer "Show no Mercy"
Accept "Metal Heart"
Death "Leprosy"
Kreator" Endless Pain"
Samael "Blood Ritual"
Bathory "Blood, Fire, Death..."
Venom "Welcome to Hell"
Black Sabbath "Black Sabbath"
Darkthrone "A Blaze in the Northern Sky"
Celtic Frost "Morbid Tales"

What means the paganism for you: religion or something more? What is the main thing for you, ideology or music?

Gusthav: Paganism for me is freedom, a way of live and the relationship with other people and the nature, not a religion, this world is plagued with religions that doesn´t give nothing but slavery, I have paganism as model of live or a way of act consequently with pagan concepts and beliefs of ancient people, they have to much wisdom, pride and respect for their traditions, this is something that modern people doesn´t have or likes because their minds are infected with religion, mass media and modern technologies.
For me there must be a balance in a band, the ideology is a very important element and people in many cases gets identified and gets involved with this, but music is essential to transmit different kind of feelings and ambients, so it must be a perfect mix of both elements to get excellent results with a composition.

Have you any favourite books and/or movies? Do you have any special hobbies?

Gusthav: Favorite books: Dracula, The Lord of the Rings, The Da Vinci Code, Futhark hand book of runemagic, EL Caballo de Troya.

Favorite movies: The Terminator, The Lord of the Rings, Braveheart, Die Hard, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the future, Conan, Red Sonja.
Special Hobbies: listen music, taking pictures, travels through nature and beautiful landscapes.

Have you ever been in Europe? (if yes, where?)

Gusthav: not yet, I hope to go to Europe someday…

Muchas gracias, Gusthav! Send some thoughts to the readers of Archangel’s Lantern, please.

Interview with Sérgio Baloff Borges
(Headhunter D.C.)

Hail Sergio! Hellcome to Archangel’s Lantern! Tell us please firstly, how did you become as Metal maniac and how did You enjoy Headhunter Death Cult? Did you play in other band(s) before Headhunter D.C.?

- Hails Georgius!!! Let the unholy mourning begin… I think my beginning in the Metal universe happened basically in the same way as most metalheads from my era. I was presented to Kiss, Iron Maiden and other classic names through one of my uncles when I was around 11, but still before that I used to like Peter Framptom and listened to AC/DC through a boyfriend of my sister. In June 1983 I was in Minas Gerais at another uncle’s house and saw some seconds of the Kiss show in Belo Horizonte on a local TV News, then my world collapsed! All that fire, explosions and lots of blood drove me crazy! After that a new dark horizon opened before me, turning darker and darker as I started knowing faster and heavier and bands as Venom and Slayer. I knew Headhunter D.C. (then named just as “Headhunter”) still in their earliest days back in 1987 when I first went to their rehearsal shared with ThrashMassacre – actually the rehearsal that day didn’t take place due to a problem on the Boss HM pedal both bands used to share, so I just would get familiar with their sound from the next rehearsal on. Then I became the band’s roadie and after the departure of Eduardo Falsão in late 1989 I joined the band as vocalist definitely. The rest is history… Yes, before joining Headhunter D.C. I did the vocals in ThrashMassacre, total raging Thrash/Speed Metal from ’86!

Necrotrooper: How was the scene back in the day? Were You friends with any of these bands, like Sarcofago, Impurity, Sepultura, Vulcano, Holocausto, Necrofago, Dorsal Atlántica, Chakal, Aamonhammer, Exterminio, Mystifier, Mutilator, Necrófago etc.?

- In ‘86 I started getting in contact with Sarcófago and Vulcano (I was a member of the Official Vulcano Fan Club back in the day) and then started corresponding with other bands as Butcher, Anarchus (Belo Horizonte), Witchhammer, MX, NecroVomit etc. Impurity came 2, 3 years later, along with Infernal Noise, Mayhem Decay Cudgel, Necrodisseminator, Evoked Damnation, Dissector, Psychic Possessor, Brutal Distortion, Expulser and others, which I also used to be penfriends with, and I’m in touch with them since early 90’s until nowadays.

Necrotrooper: How did you sign with Cogumelo Records? Were you satisfied with them?

- The deal with Cogumelo came in 1990, after our “Hell is Here” demo ’89 has caught their attention. Of course I have my complains about the label, who stopped supporting us after the release of our second album and also didn’t accomplish the deal in one more album (what also happened to other bands from the label at that same period), but on the other hand we’re also very glad and honored for having been in a label who had lots of very important bands for the Brazilian Extreme Metal scene such as Sepultura, Sarcófago, Holocausto, Mutilator, Chakal, Impurity, SexTrash etc and also for they have unleashed our name to the scene in a larger scale. They could be the biggest Extreme Metal label in the world if that wouldn’t for their odd way of working with their bands. I say this knowingly!

Who writes the lyrics and music in Headhunter D.C.?

- I’m currently the main writer, lyrics and music wise, in the band.

You recorded a very interesting split called “...In Deathmetallic Brotherhood” with Sanctifier in 2007. Would you be so kind to share us more info about this Death Metal alliance?

- Sure! Due to the great partnership and brotherhood we created with our our old French brother Hugues "Karnage" Vallot after the release of the live tape "Brazilian Deathkult Live Violence..." in early 2002 via Eternal Fire Tape Series (now available on CD via Eternal Hatred Records), I had the idea of the split with Sanctifier, inspired by the split 10" Desaster / Pentacle "...In League With...", in which each band played a cover of the other plus some unreleased material. I passed the idea to Karnage, who promptly accepted to undertake the project, and the result is the "...In Deathmetallic Brotherhood" split MLP via Legion of Death Rekordz from France. We appear on it with a then brand new song called “Hymn to Babylon”, a Sanctifier cover version for “The Cycle of the Entity” and a live recording of “Falling in Perdition”, from the “…And the Sky Turns to Black…” album.

Peruvian Crypts of Eternity Productions released a very interesting compilation, “The Darkest Archieves... from the Death Cult (1987-2007)” in 2010. What we should to know about this excellent material?

- Yeah! That’s another release I’m VERY proud of! Something that so perfectly synthesized our then 20 years of existence and was like a gift to the fans and admirers of the band with all those rare materials directly from our darkest archives. There are very old rehearsals, demo, promo, live recordings, radio cuts and other unreleased stuffs, you know, all that rare shit we love so much and die to get! CD 1 features recordings with the Falsão era (1987-1989) and CD 2 takes the Baloff era (1990-2007). We are very thankful to our Peruvian brother Richard Lucas (COE zine / prods.) for having believed in the project and released the DoCD, something that unfortunately we didn’t get in our own country. By the way, hail Ricardo!!!

You put your demonic vocals as a guest musician to bands as Chemical Death, Divine Pain, Insaintfication, Queiron and Ungodly, if I’m not mistaken. Enlighten us please about these details.

- All those guest appearances were like a way of giving some support for bands we have some friendship and also that have a special link with us, in a way or another. Of course they’re about bands that I have some admiration for their work, otherwise I’d never participate in their releases. By the way, on our last Brazilian South/Southeast tour this year I had the pleasure of being invited by Queiron to come up their stage and share the vocals with Marcelo Grous on “Impalement Ritual Assembly” on the Indaiatuba/SP show and also on “Beyond the Deepest Lie”, which they recorded for the Headhunter D.C. tribute album.

Headhunter D.C. played first time in Europe 2013. Share with the readers, please, your experiences.

- The balance I do about our very first European tour in 25 years of career (27 already completed on last May actually...), the "...In Unholy Mourning for God ...European Tour 2013") is the most positive possible, with several extremely memorable concerts, great meetings with fans – new and old –, new friendships and contacts made, good beer, good food (and sometimes not that good also...), a few days without bathing (as usual ...) and, of course, some typical hassles on a tour like that, but more importantly, between positives (mostly, thankfully) and negative aspects, is the feeling of accomplishment at having taken the Death Cult to the Old World with the same fury and bloodshot eyese with which we use to spread it here in our land, Brazil. Finally we could see 'in loco' that we usually notice right away, which is the great respect and admiration that Europeans have towards true Metal made in this side of the planet, hence the fact that we are a really great school for an endless legion of bands and maniacs out there, what makes us wonder, again, why not always we use to have this same respect within our own country, but that's a topic for another conversation... Some shows were marked by a brutal receptivity from the crowd which is already half step to fit into our concept of "memorable". Some of them were in Wermelskirchen (Germany), Barroselas (Portugal), Mointaigu (France), Torelló (Spain) among others, but I can say that in all our shows we were received with great respect and appreciation for our hard work. We are planning to return for a new tour in 2015 or 2016. Let's wait and see what happens...

As I’ve seen on your official page, Mutilation Records has just released a Tribute to Headhunter D.C. (Volume I.). Your thoughts about it?

- The idea for the tribute came from Mutilation Records’ boss Sergio Tullula a few years ago, and since then it has been something that made me extremely honored. Its recent release just made me even more proud and honored, both for the tribute concept itself and the great versions of every participating band, not to mention the testimony of each of them in recognition of our history. The release in general went flawlessly, starting with its 24-page booklet with one page for each band, something very difficult to see in this type of release, so kudos to Mutilation for such a killer release, and to all the bands for their fucking great and blameless performances. More than a tribute to us, a real deathmetallic congregation for the cause of Death Metal Underground! Check it out right fucking now!!! Volume II planned to be unleashed in the first trimester of 2015.

Brazil has an awesome unholy Metal scene. Would you be so kind to recommend us some bands (including newcomer ones)?

- I always agreed that Brazil has a killer potential in Death Metal terms since mid eighties and I’m proud for making part of this history with my band. Some trendy bands come and go, but in the end only the strong truly prevails. Among old, relatively old and newcomers I can recommend you bands as Embalmed Souls (masters of Bizarre Cult!), Sanctifier, Grave Desecrator, Apokalyptic Raids, Eminent Shadow, Bastard (former Headhunter D.C. guitarist Fabio Nosferatus’ new band), Queiron, Decomposed God, Impurity, Nervo Chaos, Unborn, Poisonous, Inside Hatred, S.O.H., Expose Your Hate, Eternal Sacrifice, Obskure, Vomepotro, Krow, Inner Demons Rise, Incinerador, Putrid Semen, Devouring, Heretic Execution, Masturbator, Cadaverizer, Vultos Vociferos, Arkanus Ad Noctum, Empty Grace, Morbid Perversion and others…

Could you tell us about your amazing Brazilian land in short? What places do you recommend to visit to the readers? Introduce please, Brazilian culinary art: which foods and drinks are your recommendations?

- Well, as you might know, Brazil is a country full of contrasts: while there are a lot of beautiful places to visit, there’s also the ugly and forgotten side of here, through which one can make sure about the big inequality that exists in the country. Anyway, talking about cool places to visit, we have so many here in our state of Bahia and in the Northeast side in general, wonderful beaches, historical places and also, of course, lots of red light districts, hehe! Pelourinho (in Salvador), Chapada Diamantina and Ilha de Itaparica are some of the so many cool places to have great time in here in Bahia! Other amazingly beautiful Northeastern cities to be visited are Fortaleza, Natal and Recife, among others. Food and drink wise I will also keep myself in the great Bahian universe, where you can taste the real Devil’s food called “acarajé” and “caruru” (both original from Africa… Cult!) and all kinds of “moquecas” (typical bahia food made with all kinds of seafood and palm oil) and traditional “cachaças” and liquors. Of course you have heard about our worldwide known caipirinha, and it can be found in every corner of Brazil. Belém’s “Tacacá” (a kind of broth made with dried shrimp and cassava leaves… a perfect hangover killer!!! =) ), Rio de Janeiro’s “feijoada” and Manaus’ traditional “Tambaqui” (a river’s roasted fish) are also other examples of pure cult Brazilian food! Saúde e bom apetite!!! ;)

Your favourite all-time 10 Metal albums/and vocalists are?

- Always a very difficult task to make these kind of lists, even harder when it’s only 10. Let’s try anyway (no particular order):
Albums:
1-POSSESSED “Seven Churches”
2-IRON MAIDEN “Piece of Mind”
3-IMMOLATION “Dawn of Possession”
4-DEATH “Scream Bloody Gore”
5-BLACK SABBATH “Master of Reality”
6-SLAYER “Hell Awaits”
7-IRON MAIDEN “Powerslave”
8-SEPULTURA “Morbid Visions”
9-VENOM “Black Metal”
10-BLACK SABBATH “Same”

Vocalists:
1-Jeff Becerra
2-Cronos
3-Ozzy
4-Chuck Schuldiner
5-Bruce Dickinson
6-Troy Dixler
7-John Tardy
8-David Wayne
9-J. D. Kimball
10-Mille Petrozza (“Endless Pain/Pleasure to Kill” era)

Of course such names as Barney Greenway (up to “Utopia Banished”), Ross Dolan, Lee Dorian (Napalm Death era) and others also deserve to be on this list for being great ‘vokillists’ and also big influences and inspiration for my vochaos job.

Beside the music do you have any special hobbies?

- Hum… nothing really relevant to be mentioned. Almost all things I like to do in my life I do in a so dedicated way that it’s hard for me to call it as “hobby”, as playing Death Metal music for instance, that is already a kind of ideology for me. The same for collecting fanzines from all over the world since 1985. Headbanging and drinking beer must be considered a “religious” thing for me (haha!), so they also can’t fit on the hobby aspect. Argh, I haven’t any special hobbies definitely! Fuck the hobbies! HAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

What about Headhunter Death Cult’s future plans?

- We don’t use to make long-dated plans, as everything happens here in a non predetermined way, but an official DVD is still to be put in practice as soon as we have some support to finally do it. Also doing another European tour for 2015 or 2016 is among them. By the way, new unholy anthems are already being written for a future release, whether an EP or a new full length preferably. Watch out!!! Total death!!!!!!!!!

Obrigado, Sergio! Share your Headhunter Death Cult thoughts in the end.

- Headhunter D.C. is 27 UNINTERRUPTED years on the Underground darkest paths now, so we should never to be confused with that kind of bands that used to play Death Metal only when it used to be “cool”, when it was the trend of the moment and then started to play gay music for years for later trying a comeback to the roots claiming for never having forgotten Death Metal music… fuck!!! We have crossed 3 fucking decades without EVER betraying our roots, so Metal of Death means much more for us than simply music or entertainment… it’s our way of life… and DEATH! FUCK THE TRENDIES!!!!!!!!! Thanks Georgius for the support, and for all deathmetallions out there, get in touch for a real deathmetallic alliance in the name of the Death Cult! Proud to be Death… proud to be Metal!!!!!!!!!! ALL HAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SIX SIX SIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! \m/
